The dell in my country finally brought in the gtx 460m for upgrade. I called dell up and negotiated the price with the sales department.
the final price i got is :
Gtx 460m : $475 USD
i7 920xm : $390 USD
Did any of you get the graphic card from dell? if so are these prices marked up way too high? It does not include the technician charge.. which is about $50 usd.
And also, I have only enough money to get either one of them.
For games like shogun 2 total war, starcraft 2 etc, and for the upcoming guild wars 2.
Should i go for cpu or gpu?
Much regards,
John

GPU upgrade from what? 260m?
-
yes the 260m, it's overheating issue + slow fps' driving me mad.
-
390$ for an OEM 920xm is fantastic imo, get it if you don't desperately need a better GPU... what do you have atm?
I don't know about the 460m, but the 5850 in Switzerland is about 500$ incl. technician... the 460m is definitely more.
Prices unfortunately really depend on the region...
If you're current card is a 5850 go for the CPU, otherwise it may make more sense to get the GPU, especially if your main tasks on the system are gaming...
Edit: You beat me. 260m... I'd go for the GPU if I were you... but just to say it again, 390$ for the 920xm is an absolutely fantastic price imo. -

Dell is selling an OEM i7-920XM for $390? Where is this?
-
$390 for an OEM 920xm is cheaper than my ES :s
-
Gtx 460m : $475 USD ---> Over price
i7 920xm : $390 USD ---> Under price -
my current specs are :
cpu --> i7 720qm
gpu --> gtx 260m
which is more sensible for me to upgrade? a underpriced cpu or a overpriced gpu, which in thise case seems like the games depend more on gpu than cpu o.o -

Yep, for the most part, an upgraded GPU will give you a greater gaming performance dividend than the upgraded CPU, but that price for a OEM 920xm is almost irresistible. But the GPU is the smart choice.

thanks so much for the info guys.. but roughly how overpriced is the gtx 460m here compared to other plces? say... in the states?
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Last I heard, Dell charges about $400 for the 460M in the States, but prices change, and someone may be able to provide more current information. A Clevo version is available for $350 at R&J Tech. So the price you're looking at is not outrageous given that Dell products nearly always carry a premium, sometimes substantial, in overseas markets.
-
Yeah, and you have no warranty issues if you get the card from Dell and let it install by a technician (assuming you still have warranty).
-
Geez,sounds like i got ripped off,but anyways,i just got the ES version of 920XM,cost me USD 398+ free shipping.Before that bought a Dell 5850 for USD 310,installed everything myself coz tech charges more than 100 bucks for the installation.Glad i downloaded INAP's guide.hard to believe 2 pages of PDF helped save me 100 bucks...

lol i dont think u can find it in the states right now.....
wow oem $390 thats the price for an ES on ebay... hell the the 940 is $590
but if u can get the 460 u should over the cpu -
I wouldn't mind doing that really,& if INAP were to get donations for his tips,i think he should be retire a rich man by now...

I just called dell about getting a new GPU. The 460m is now 475 with a 50 dollar mail in rebate.
