Hey guys, I am thinking about upgrading my i7 740QM to the more powerful i7 920XM. I was wandering if this was the OEM version and not an engineering sample and if so is it a good price? SLBLW Intel CPU Core

Also is there a detailed guide of upgrading the CPU/GPU as I would like to re-paste them both. And do I need to buy thermal pads as well? If so what size and what is the best brand as well. And also the best brand for thermal paste.

    Many thanks.

    Read under item specifics:
Expensive for a ES version? I picked my OEM version up for £200 so around the same price.

Check the link in my signature for a video on how to remove, upgrade and re-paste both cpu and gpu. I recommend ICD7 or ICD 24 thermal paste (same stuff just different size tube) and Phobya 1.0mm 5w/mk thermal pads.

EDIT: Just noticed you're in UK so you can purchase here: Phobya Thermal pad Ultra 5W/mk 1mm (120x20mm) | eBay and 2 x Tubes IC Diamond 7 Carat CPU Thermal Compound Heatsink Paste | eBay

I also found some 940XM processors that work well in M15x http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Processor...Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item27d6367f00 and http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Processor...Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item27d6317c0b. Neither list if ES or OEM but price is good. Second one is saying buy it now for £150.

Sweet man, where exactly do I put thermal pads on? And where did you find an OEM version for £200?

I bought my OEM cpu from the marketplace on this forum. Occasionally great deals pop up. Keep a close eye on the Computer Components section.
The thermal pads should cover all the big black chips (VRAM chips). This usually requires 2 rectangular strips that will cover each row. Then place the left over bits on the grey voltage chips and some of the smaller black chips.
Here is a picture showing coverage of an AMD 7970M. It won't be the same but you can get the basic idea of what needs covering.
