Im thinking of upgrading from my current i5. Im thinking of either a 920 or 940 i7. My question is do I have to upgrade my laptop battery to a 9 cell for either of those processors? When customizing a M15x on The AW website it doesn't let you pick a 940 i7 without picking the 9 cell.

I dont believe you 'have to' upgrade the battery BUT Im pretty sure you will be disappointed with the amount of unplugged time because of the processor's power consumption. IF you are plugged in, almost all the time, the processor will be an awesome upgrade. I love the 820 and know a '40 class processor must be screaming hot, especially the 940. -h-

The CPU will run heavily underclocked as far as I know because 6-cell battery has a low watt. Of course thats so if you are unplugged and on battery.

they probably don't let you because it will be under spec. Li-ion batts have a safety circuit designed to limit the amperage in order to avoid overheating. I'm guessing the 6 cell just doesn't cut it for the i7 9x0's
