@Malignant: Saw in an article on TechInferno where a top-end M17x-R2 was being benched with heavy overclocks to compare to the M18x. Because of the CPU heat generated (they were using a 940xm at 26x x 137.5) by the o/c, they left the Multiplier box in ThrottleStop unchecked to provide a release valve in connection with the wPrime 1024M stability test. That allowed the R2 to complete the test; otherwise, the temps would cause it to crash. This was testing done by Joker5150, StamatisX and that bunch, who should be familiar from the M17x forum.

Greetings,
My M6500 w/ES 940XM did the following in ThrottleStop:
Multiplier x25 on all cores
TDP/TC 110/100
~14seconds @ 89 degrees
Seems that mine is running really hot, I repasted with Diamond 7 last night, ill see if that makes a difference this morning. -
-
Careful with such settings, that's crazy high. Do you know exactly what the TDP/TDC values are and what happens when you change them? Because I'm afraid you don't.
The stock (Intel) TDP of this chip is 55W, this means your cooling system has to be able to cope with this amount of heat.
Doubling the TDP will naturally lead to much higher temps since the CPU won't start to throttle as soon as with the stock settings, but running the CPU always produces heat. The faster the CPU runs, the hotter it gets. Raising the TDP will allow the CPU to run faster, but it will also run significantly warmer.
With your settings, 89°C after 15 seconds of 100% load is reasonable, depending on the ambient temps and on the heatsink / cooling design.
You won't be able to do rendering and similar CPU intense stuff with these settings, unless you have auxiliary cooling methods.
Still, throttlestop is very useful to speed up your system. In applications like games or constructing something with CAD the CPU doesn't get used 100% all the time, there are peaks, 100% load will never be for a longer period. There are always moment when the CPU has less to do and will therefore clock down and also cool down, before clocking up again due to the increased load.
This means for daily use you should easily be able to set your CPU to 25x across all cores (depending on your heatsink), but it won't work for rendering stuff with the CPU, things will get too hot and the system will start to throttle or even shutdown because of the heat.
A general consensus is, that if you're able to run a 32M wprime 1.55 test on 8 threads and the multis stay at the set level for the whole test, the TDP/TDC settings are sufficient for daily use.
(The 32M test is for simulating the moments when the CPU is really busy).
A setting of 25x on all 4 cores should be possible with about 85W/62A, maybe sligthly higher TDP, can't remember my numbers at the moment. Try it for yourself. -
Where is the max of 940xm ? It keeps impressing me

That how it behaves all the time.Attached Files:

If that's how it behaves all the time then it's not really making use of your CPU, the load is at about 15% on each thread, except one thread is at 82%
Anyway, 27x on all cores with 100% load on each of them for video editing would need additional cooling methods to prevent your system from shutting down. -
Shoot man, it's called life...as far as we know, WE ONLY LIVE IT ONCE!!!!!!!
I've had mine as high as ~160/150...maybe even higher. I'm not worried about it...at all. But thanks for the concern, had I had any worry, whatsoever and no clue on what i was doing, that would have been a HUGE help.
It's running cooler with the repaste but no faster, unfortunatly. How can people be getting 5 second wprime runs on a 920 while my best run is 14 seconds on a 940, with the exact same TS settings?
-
I just tried it with the 85/62...~18 seconds and never hit x25, log attached.

I then tried 95/72 and 105/82 but it wasn't able to hold x25 until 115/92, but it still took ~17 seconds, very confusing and somewhat discouraging.

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Those results suggest that your 940xm is running on 4 threads. Within narrow tolerances, any 920/940xm set to 25-25-25-25 will complete the wPrime v1.55 32M test in about 7.72 seconds, using ~89W of power, excluding situations where CPU temps are either very low or very high. Temps are normal, so it's not thermal throttling. It's not power starvation or TDP limitation or you would never be able to reach 25x. The fact that it reaches 25x at 100% load, but still takes a little more than twice as long as expected to complete the 32M run can only mean that it is operating at less than 50% capacity. Check the Advanced Settings in wPrime and assure it is set to 8 threads. If wPrime is set properly, check to be sure that hyperthreading is turned on. If HT is working, check Msconfig>Boot>Advanced Settings and be sure the Number of Processors is either unchecked or set to 8. Something is limiting the CPU from using its full capacity. Good luck.

dtdionne: I think The Revelator is absolutely right. Does the Task Manager show 8 graphs or only 4? Does ThrottleStop show 8 lines of multiplier data or only 4? Msconfig which was mentioned above is the most likely problem when this happens.
If you need sky high TDP / TDC values to maintain the 25 multi when fully loaded compared to other users then it is likely that you have a "leaky" chip. Not all CPUs are created equal. Some are junk and need to consume a lot of juice to run at the same speed as a more efficient processor with the same model number. That's why extreme overclockers like to buy handfuls of CPUs and then pick through them to find one good one and dump the rest of them on EBay. -
Well, im using TS's builtin benchmark...i just assumed that it had the correct version of prime. But the older version of prime mentioned in these threads gave me a much different result. Could that be playing a role in my weirdness?
I've been worried about voltage leak on this chip since i bought it, thats what being in a rush will do to ya...I'm looking for an official 940xm. Any possibility that intel might release a 980 or 990 extreme processor?
Thanks guys -
Intel has moved on so the 940XM is the top of the heap for your motherboard. The 2920XM has been out for a while and the 3920XM is due out next April. It would be nice but Intel has no motivation $$$$$ to produce a 960XM or 980XM to keep a few overclockers happy. -
How should I set my 940xm in Throttlestop so that I get the same effects as having 5% factory OC enabled in the BIOS? I hate it that every time the computer goes to sleep, I lose my OC and it goes back to default clock speed.
Overclocking 940XM
