hello guys,
I just want to inform lovers of alienware m15x in this forum. today I try to compare our default, and modification fan.
the following test:
Tests carried out at room temperature of about 26 degrees Celsius AC are not run because Taiwan has now entered spring and the temperature is quite comfortable without air conditioning. there are 3 attempts done.
1. a built-in fan - gives all the paste from scratch, thermal pad. then run 3DMARK's Fire Strike Ultra Stress Test. details like the attached image. (Avg >80)
2. The fan and heatsink are modified using the first generation AW 15. Alienware heatsink but the fan is replaced with Alienware 17 R4 with 11.0 CFM capability. after that it gives a past paste then runs the 3DMARK Fire Strike Ultra Stress Test, details like the attached image. (Avg 76)
3. The fan is replaced by using alienware 17 R3 with 11.0 CFM capability after which it gives a re-paste then runs the 3DMARK Fire Strike Ultra Stress Test, details like the attached image. (Avg 73)
conclusion by using AW 15 heatsink by modifying the default fan replaced with AW 17 R3. we can run stresstest without having to worry because the temperature is too hot. from the results obtained, the maximum temperature is around 73 degrees Celsius. while the default heatsink can exceed 80 degrees Celsius

yes just a comparison between original fan and mod fan.
used AW15 old generation but the default fan replace with AW17 R3 and R4. which is the best result coming from AW 17 R3 in avg around 73c

Great. Did you disassemble the fan down to the stator and glue it in? Or leave the backing of the original fan?
Did you see my picture of installing he M4700 fan as replacement for M15x CPU fan?
What is your firestrike score on the default settings with the 980M? I got 4.2k with a 680M.
I am going to try a " M6500 CPU Cooling Fan W227F 0W227F" as M15x GPU fan and use since under $4 and 12.5 CFM. I think I can cut the body and use hot glue and thick card stock to create a drop in. I have a M17x R4 where a replacement fan is coming so should have that one to try too.Last edited: Oct 8, 2018 -
i did with stupid way, i cut it with metal scissors and glue it
my firestrikescore is 5.7k and most of the time the GPU has power limit.
see the pic,

Nice! I probably will do the same. Odd that your stator side is metal when I view a lot of the R3/R4 listed are plastic.

Use the m6700 fan - its 13cfm which is the highest of all dell fans. The m6700 was known for having the best cooling of the precision series.

Also pull the centre pin on your charger, your gpu score should be atleast 8.4k. 5.4k is only a tiny bit higher than my 7970m m15x

Mastermind5200 Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah lol M6700 has amazing cooling, GPU never gets above 65C, CPU never above 75C, and thats with normal paste/no metal
Original cooling system Vs AW15 Cooling system Modification
