It depends what you do on your laptop. I actually would say that the laptop might be a tad too big for you if you just want to have a fast laptop.

Anyone know how many watts are needed for a power inverter to plug in the laptop on the road?

I use some pretty demanding software for my work, but even if I didn't, I would still choose the M15x. The way it looks simply blows everything else away. If you're going to spend money on a high-end notebook, this is the one to get. Just compare the package to Sagar, Asus, Clevo and the rest.
For me a 15 inch is better than a 17 inch, because I also use Word, Excel and the lots quite often and they kind of disappear on such a large screen. I also had to save for quite a while to finally be able to buy my dream machine and wouldn't want to save another couple of months in order to buy the M17x. If you're a non-gamer the M15x is more than perfect for you and I'm sure you won't regret this purchase for a single minute!
Good luck with your choice. -
however for a non gamer, i've always thought netbooks are the best thing under the sun... the longer battery life and smaller size (10" for a normal keyboard feel) outdo the M15x in terms of portability. -
-
Boy I love my M15x!
Last night I woke up at 4am, tired and thirsty... SO I get up and go downstairs, as I get a glass of water I see the lighting of my M15x in the other room... I ended up spending about 5 minutes, starring at the beauty of my M15x and the awesome lighting system
I looove it -
-
Haha nice, the M15x/M17x do look very nice at night w/the light fx turned on. -

Is there any way to shut the LED lights off? LIke during the day I doubt I'd use them much, can I hit a button or key to shut them off?
I mean totally turn them all off, not make them dim or turn black, just completely shut off to save their life time a little. -

Use what you like. I do.
I am correct about NTFS though. They had 10 years to make a better file-system and have done nothing. Sure, like I said most file-systems get fragmentation even ext. However, nothing like NTFS. Do a clean install of Windows.... Ok now look your file-system is probably 20% fragmented already. Really, Windows can't even install itself correctly. That is a big problem that a $200 OS, that had 10 years to develop it's file-system shouldn't have.
OpenGL is far better then DirectX. OpenGL is far more open then DirectX allowing much more accessibility for developers. Linux is a far easier OS to develop for then Windows. Also, Linux memory management is much better then Windows. That is one reason WOW runs better in WINE under Linux then it does on Windows. Game developers make games for Windows because they have a larger market share. Windows has a bigger market share because Microsoft makes OEM deals with computer manufacturers. Most people are not going to install there own OS, so they use Windows.
Linux listens far more to it users then Microsoft dose. Linux is created by it's users, so whatever the users want they get.
Nope, nothing Microsoft makes works. Not even there defrag DOS utility works. You have to use a defrag utility form another company to do the job right. Windows lack of security allows for viruses. So, windows made there own anti-virus and that doesn't work.
I don't know about when you used Linux. But now ATI and nVidia both have Proprietary drivers so there is no way you can compile them. nVidia supports Linux/BSD/Solaris/MacOS/Windows. ATI suport sucks so maybe that was what you had when you tried out Linux before. They only "Officially" support RedHat/Fedora/SUSE/Ubuntu/MacOS/Windows. However, both ATI and nVidia have OpenSource drivers now that are getting good they will need a year or two before they are up to par with the proprietary drivers in the 3D department though.
In any case if you were compiling your video driver that is what your problem was. You can't compile it. It's a proprietary binary blob. Also, you should use a binary disto if you don't like to compile software. That way everything is a binary blob. -
Hi guys,
any news about new graphics card for the m15x ?!
Iam really thinking about ordering it but i'm afraid that will be a new upgrade for it,, -
We should probably get back to topic anyhoo, not the place for this -
-
I will try calling them 2morow, -

Is there an m15x optimization thread? I saw the m11 one and some of the tips there seemed to have an impact. Just wondering if there is one for the m15x. I went through about 5 pages of threads and didnt see one.
thx -
Well it seems all new Synaptics touch-pads support Multi-touch and Gestures. I have enabled the circular scrolling and it works well in Linux. I have not gotten the two finger scrolling working yet but I have just started messing with it and think I have a few things conflicting at the moment. I bet it dose work though.
Here are a couple links to get it working in Windows.

My M15x restarts when I shut it down. As advised by my many forum members, I had removed the nvidia drivers and installed the new one but still the restart problem was there.
Now, I swapped the hard drive from my other M15x(no restarting problem) to this one but still the problem persisted with this m15x. But the other one didn't have the restarting problem even with the hard drive of this M15x.
If it was a driver related issue it would have been resolved by swapping the hard drives.
Or Am I missing something...
And both M15x have same bios A03. -
when uninstalliing old driver make sure to clean the registry too. i know the problem is kinda weird but is solvable.
also thanks to wattos, now we have a stealth mode indicator. which is totally sweet.
check it out.:

Anyone running Bad Company 2 on the M15X ? I'd like to know how to set up my graphic options for this game to run it smoothly..
-
-
ok, someone mentioned hbao in the other thread too, i'll see how it turns out
-
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
By the way how did you clear the registry just for nvidia drivers.. -
-
Curious to know your settings...
I run everything on high but I have the 16:9 screen. 8x AA, 1x AF, and HBAO off.
dunno if there's a command to get FPS but it runs nice and smooth.
-
Looking forward for Crysis 2.. I have yet to find a demanding game for my M15x.. !
And since I cant run benchmarks anymore (trial version ftl) I cant see the difference with/without the overclocking stuff I've done..! -
-
See here to download fraps and other benchmarking tools 8D

And Direct X is good too. I like OpenGL just because it's open, but Direct X has been (at worst) competitive for...what...a decade now? At last 7 or 8 years. -
Getting a bit annoyed by having to plug/unplug cables for external display every time I start up. At work I use the M15x only but at home it's attached to an external display (HDMI->DP to AW2210). Virtually every time I start up with the cable already in, the AW2210 goes into sleep mode and despite Windows already starting up, the AW2210 doesn't see any input from the M15x. The AW2210's got 2 HDMI ports, and bizarrely when I swap to the other HDMI port, it suddenly realises there's input from the M15x. Any thoughts?
-
hi my M15x keeps restarting from sleep mode, what can i do to stop that?
-
I rest my case.

This laptop running Linux has...
No problem shutting down
No problem with the OSD buttons going out
No problem with the AlienFX not working
Superb touch-pad response and tracking
No need to install a special touch-pad driver for mulit-touch
No viruses, spy-ware, ad-ware
No fragmentation
No registry problems -
There are many things that I don't like about Linux. Lack of games, lack of standards (compiling your own installations, jeez what a hassle). Etc.. Please stop nagging about it. Perhaps you should start an Alienware M15x Linux thread here.
ANY OS is good when set up by someone who knows. On windows you need to find work-arounds. In my opinion Linux is one huge workaround. Everyone I know takes days just to set up the basic OS. Fine if that's what you want. Most people who buy this machine just want to play games.. Lots of them.
In my opinion, this is not the place to vent your frustrations at an OS you don't even use. You like Linux, that's fine, but please stop whining about Windows here. It's the official OS of this system and for most users it does what they want - PLAY GAMES.. -
And linux has games to...like solitaire... -
-
Hey guys, those anyone here have a Service1.exe file in C:\Program Files\OSD ? i think my comp may be infected with a virus but the scans i've done hasn't detected anything.
-
I've got it too.... Probably not a virus. Scanned with ESET.
-
If you are experiencing your minimap or crosshairs suddenly jumping all over or consuming your whole screne for a few seconds you have to run BC2 in dx9 instead of dx10. The only thing you'll lose is hbao, which you should have turned that off anyways if you want the game to run smoothly
Good luck! Any new BIOS updates lately? -
-
Running smooth in 1600x900, AA 2X, AF 2X, no hbao, medium/high details
i'll try with your settings since we have the same config ! -
oh and which resolution by the way ? -
