Hi all,
So recently, Nvidia released new cards gtx 670mx, 675mx, and 680mx. All of these cards are of kepler architecture. The power draw on the gtx 670mx is suppose to be 75 watts, similar to the old gtx 280m and the pre. Has anyone though of trying out these new cards?

I was thinking of trying it but honestly I don't use my computer for much more than work nowadays, and nvidia cards are expensive. I'm still hoping that AMD releases the 7950m I would definitely go for that.....

I've seen m15x's with 7970m. We officially support only up to the 460m on that platform. However it might work just fine according to some users.
-
I'm a bit hesitant about using AMD cards; their drivers don't seem to work as flawlessly as Nvidia's.
-
the M15x doesnt play well with Nvidia cards. I really wanted a 580m or 680m and Would have paid the money but noone can seem to make them work really well other than svl7 and the only one he got to work really well was the gtx660m. He got the 680m to work but with heavy vbios mods and it cost him a few hundred mhz on his processor overclock.
[Guide] M15x with Nvidia GTX 660m
The 7970m is as drop-in-and-go as it gets. With a 5 minute vbios flash i got mine to 900/1300 at 1.0v with no throttling issues.Scored 5300 in 3dmark 2011 even with my wimpy processor. Only thing I miss is Physx for borderlands 2. Other than that I like playing on my M15x now more than my desktop! 3930k with 1 gtx 680 and 16gb ram. Part of that is cause I cant stand my monitor lol. -
Does anyone know why Nvidia cards dont work well with M15x? Is it power consumption or bad drivers, etc.
-
nVidia cards have some vbios compatibility thing i believe where it checks which computer its in(idk if that's right).
There's plenty of working nvidia cards in the M15X though: 240M, 260M, 460M, 560M, 470M, 580M, 660M, & 680M. The 670M, 675M, 670MX, & 675MX should work too but may need a vbios edit.
I myself am trying to get a 680M for my M15X. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That 680M is VERY power hungry! You might be better off with the MX 670 or 675 GPUs.
-
Btw I message the eurocom seller on ebay about the 670MX, he said it will work and you just have to state you have a M15X.
680M works too but needs a vbios.
Eurocom seller said it will work with 670MX, 675MX and 680M*!
*He said the 680M needs the 180watt adapter althought i doubt you NEED it. Never can be say though =] -
@loafer987: I am thinking of getting the 7970m. However, I do not mess with overclocking anything. I guess I am just a 'stock' kind of guy. Anyhow, I have a M15x with a i7-920XM and a 240-watt PSU. I'm also using the A09 Bios. Will I be able to just -- as you stated -- "drop-in-and-go" with this card? Also, I will be buying a Dell version, so does that mean I won't need to flash the vBios? Will the stock fans be okay -- or will I need to monitor the temps with HWInfo? Will I have to undervolt? Sorry for all the questions, but I am a n00b, lol. I appreciate any advice. I just want to be able to drop this card in and play -- with no tinkering whatsoever -- if possible.

The 670mx should work in the M15X. I have seen some M15X with this GPU.

Go for the 675MX. It is a Kepler chip not fermi which means it is the the same league as the 680M.
Due to being less powerful it will also have a lower power consumption. This card might actually be a good fit for the M15x therefore. -
Yes, a 670MX works. I used to have one in my M15x. It played games great. Cooling was never a problem when I was playing games. The card stayed in a 60c to hardly reaching 70c state. The 670mx is a kepler card, so it is as power efficient as it's 680 counterpart(hence the 75w tdp rating). I also had plenty of oc headroom (with a 720qm)
I agree with King of Interns on of purchasing a 675mx. I am transitioning from 670mx to a 675mx. I know I can achieve great gains with this this card on a oc.

Would you sell me your 670mx? Or do you mean your decision is transitioning lol
-
I would gladly sell you my 670mx, but it is in a deceased state (my fault, not m15x's).

If I had the equipment and documentation, then yes it could be revived. Since the M15x has a non-definitive method of posting errors (those blinky key locks), I cannot pinpoint the problem. It would be nice if POST showed the error codes. The card heats up, and the thermal control IC communicates with the EC(fan modulation). I know it has to be a simple component on the board that has gone bad. I'm guessing my bent heatsink was the cause of it's death.

Aliexpress.com : Buy new Nvidia GeForce GTX 670MX 3GB GDDR5 for CLEVO alienware m15x m17x m18x from Reliable GTX 670MX suppliers on upgrademonkey
I just ordered the above. Anyone knows which driver and .inf on laptopvideo2go.com works best with this card on the M15x? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! -
I´m in the same situation than our comrade above, waiting for a gtx 670mx from upgrade monkey (UK in my case).
When i spoke with them, they told me that card will run perfect in our system (i have a m15x with 720Qm, i suppose doesnt matter in that respect).
I mentioned geting such drivers from laptop2go too, and they said me that was the proper step, but, perhaps, i would have to add the card´s ID to the .INF file. Is that true or not in every case?
Thanks so much for everything, this community is awesome ( and very helpfull for amateurs like me )
I hope come back here when the card arrive !!
Regards -
@Moreja
Upgrademonkey just responded on my query. They said a guide would be included and everything should work fine. I guess it should be the same for you too. Still waiting for shipment to arrive... -
If you go with a 670mx or 675mx, will you need to buy a new heatsink as well? Or will the stock from a 260m or similar work? I'm thinking about pickign up another M15x
-
send my ID and they modd the driver for me, but nothing about the guide (i suppose it´s because i havent officially
ordered the card yet. I´m waiting for a "extra work payment" that will arrive next week ).
However i hope that mess will not be very difficult ( now i remember a Notebookreview thread about gtx 560m install in m15x that explain in detail how to do)
I will be aware of your wished card arrival haha, and i hope you post the first impressions!.
670mx rules! Xd
Regards -
No, a new heatsink or different x-braket is not required. 260 heatsink fits perfectly . Just geting the driver and modded .inf for making it work -
@Moreja
Yea, I'll post my first impressions on it. The only game that I'm playing at the moment is BF3, so I'll probably test it on that. There are severe FPS drops in certain areas of some maps with the 260M on mainly low settings. I expect the 670MX to run BF3 smoothly on at least high settings. I'll also test it with 3DMark Vantage. Will post more when I get everything installed. -
Just received the 670MX from Upgrademonkey and installed it.
Hardware wise, it's plug and play if upgrading from a 260M, no modifications required and everything fits perfectly. Drivers wise, the guide that I received wasn't very useful. I had to go through 4 or 5 drivers and finally settled on 310.90 driver and nvdm.inf from laptopvideo2go for the moment.
Tested it on 3DMark Vantage.
Previously scored 6748 (Graphics: 5546 CPU: 19288) with the 260M on stable OC.
GTX 670MX (Default clocks)
With overclock using EVGA Precision X (GPU clock +119, Memory clock +800)
Ran BF3 smoothly on ultra settings and was quite impressed.
Edit: When I ran BF3 on ultra settings, it was on an empty server, just to customize the video settings. On a full 64/64 server, I had to turn down some of the settings to high as it was stuttering intermittently.
Ignore the grey edit part. Not sure if it was my 920XM that caused the stuttering. After some reconfiguration, the 670MX was able to run BF3 smoothly on full ultra settings using SSAO instead of HBAO. -
Try to run 3dmark11
P.S. Great job! -
I'm using 314.22 driver from Nvidia and nvdm from laptopvideo2go now.
GPU clock +129 Memory clock +950 OC
Read that +135 & +1000 for GPU & Mem clock are the OC limits (w/o vbios or volt mod) for this card.
Someone on overclock.net was able to get 5.9k 3dmark11 and 22k vantage scores with mods.
Some people says it matters what windows think of your hardware, not too sure myself.
-
I have the 670mx 1,5gb version on my m15x but i cant overclock it that high i just can reach 600 on memory and 135 on core clock and when i put dat i have a score of 5460 but when i go with stock clocks i get higher score what can i do?

Necesito, aparte de actualizar la bios, meterle los drives como estáis diciendo?( laptop2go)
al final la compraste? como te va?
saludos. -
Wow, I have been procrastinating on this upgrade for a long time. Well, now I noticed that Sony Vegas Pro doesn't support my GTX 260M so it's really time for an upgrade. Its nice to see that you guys have had success with the 670MX and the 675MX so I guess that's still on my radar. Although recently, I noticed that the GTX 770M is also available for purchase, and is also rated at 75 Watts. (I can also get it cheaper than the 675) If anyone has gotten the 770M to work in their Alienware, please let me know!
-
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
GMT you should get yourself the 770M if it is cheaper. It will work and can perform on par with the 7970M in many games apparently.
-
Thanks, this is what I have in mind:

fatboyslimerr Alienware M15x Fanatic
That is the clevo version of the card. It will work but not all features like auto fan control or displayport. You may also have to flash to a Dell vBIOS. Always better to get a Dell card but these are harder to find.
-
Damn, i actually use display port. How can i tell what brand it was originally made for if it isn't mentioned? Like what about this card?

The light blue is a give away for clevo cards.

So are all Dell cards green?
-
Greetings GMT.
I have to say i was looking for that upgrade too
But now a new branded clevo 675mx appears, cheaper than ever, on Ebay : http://item.mobileweb.ebay.es/viewitem?index=0&sbk=1&nav=SEARCH&itemId=161071423820 haha (2gb version btw)
Im going to try with this one, but now i've just read the Fatboyslimer comment about the manual control fans issue, and i get confuse.
I thouht that fact just happen only with some ati cards (7970m and others), not with Nvidia kepler cards for M15x.
I was following the "675mx 4go help" thread by Riri-fifi, and i didn't found anything respect this.
Could you clarify that please, if you wouldn't mind
Thanks for all! -

EDIT:
Apparently I was wrong, a Clevo GTX 670MX or 675MX does have native fan support in the M15x as do many Nvidia cards.
Some will have displayport issues that can be fixed by flashing to a Dell vBIOS but you can't flash all Clevo cards to a Dell vBIOS.
Its (some) AMD cards that are made by Clevo that don't have native fan controls. Sorry for any confusion caused. -
I wasn't sure at all with that issue (so many cards and compatibilities questions...) ha.
Now i can purchase my card peacefully -

The 670MX has been working great for me since installation, almost 3 months ago, and a huge improvement over my old gpu (260M). I guess mine is a clevo card (blue - pic in post #27) but I'm not sure what's the fuss whether it's green (dell) or blue. My benchmark scores, stock or OCed, are what I should be getting compared to other 670MXs on 3DMark.
-
I dont remember now, but: did you have any problem or complication at the time of installing the card? Like the displayport issue or had to flash any vbios...didn't you right?.
And just out of curiosity, how are your benchs compared to others newers systems with a 670mx? (Equipped with better CPU's for example)
Is still the m15x prepared for the war? Hehe
Edit: btw the 670mx & 675mx are blue because haven't exist a Dell version of the cards. I don't know if it would be a MSI version wich colour it has -
@MorejaSparda
The installation was very straightforward, no problems at all. Display-port works as it should. About the vbios, it came flashed as a Dell card as it was indicated that the vendor is Dell on GPU-z (screenshot of GPU-z also on post #27).
My 3dmark11 score was 4685 (OCed) and comparing with other 670MXs here, it seems that my system is above the average scores. Not bad for a 3 year old system. The OC limits are not unlocked btw. -
Hey guys, I just ordered a 770m off ebay, and I'm pretty excited to get it. Any advice for Kepler architecture card installation?
