Well, my SSD recovered from the episode theother day. Today, I was downloading a large file for my GPS (took a couple of hours). I had backed down on thespeed so as to avoid stressing the new paste job too much. SO temps were running all in the high 50's to mid 60's. All of a sudden there was a soft pop and the screen went black and all activity stopped. I pressed the power button and it immediately booted normally and I was able to resume the download. I was running on AC, using a relatively new 150W power brick (2 months old). Power brick is warm, but not very hot. BTW, I had the back of themachile elevated slightly toimprove circulation to CPU.
It's almost as though I tripped a circuit breaker - but with an automatic instant reset. I am now running with both Throttlestop and HWInfo64 logging.
Any idea what happened? What was the pop?
Thanks again,
Joe

Try running everything at stock. Even if you think you've turned throttlestop off, you might still be running a big OC on the cpu. This happened to me and I got a few power offs because of this.
Go into settings and make sure "Do Not Reset FID/VID on Exit" is unticked. Also I have a profile that is basically stock configuration i.e. no clock/chipset or multipler options ticked with 25/24/16/16 @ 62/62 that I select whilst still in monitoring mode just to ensure clocks return to normal.
I think you need to restart to clear OC from cpu.
Next time you get a restart check the blue ring around the power cable input to see if it goes out. If it does that is the power brick tripping. -
Thanks,
I'll give it a try in the next couple of days (work schedule) and report back.

Any errors logged on the EventViewer?

I disabled ThrottleStop as suggested, to take it back to stock - so far, stable. To I restarted Throttlestop, with parameters that match stock (24,24,18,18) - so far, so good. Max temp with all 4 cores stressed is 65 degrees. Will try to inch up to see if I can identify source of crash.

Stock for 940xm is 25/24/16/16 @ 62/62 meaning 2.13Ghz.
New problem - abrupt black screen - temps in 60's
