Hi there,
I decided to upgrade my 240m with a 560m. So I fitted the 560m into my m15x and used the same x-bracket, which seems to have been successful and now I'm trying to modify my graphics driver (320.49) to make them compatible.
All previous modified inf file download links are now unavailable and so I've attempted modifying it myself, many times... And failed.
If someone could write a step by step guide to modifying the driver for the latest version or offer a similar solution then that would be fantastic.

Just reply to this post after you download cuz I will delete this link. It's my personal skydrive account. Oh and hit the star icon on lower left side of this post if it works -
goto LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers and input your cards string number at the top, you get this by system properties/device manager/display adapters open it up and under your gfx card right click and go properties and under details change the drop down box to "hardware ids" write down the code to enter it into the site and it will check to see if theres a "already done" driver/inf file for you.
what I did was download the latest version of NVidia drivers for my 2GB Nvidia GTX660m from NVidia site and downloaded the inf file from that site and once I extracted the drivers I simply overwrite the file with the downloaded inf file and driver installation went without a hiccup. everything is working from auto fans, to internal/external monitor and audio over DP.
just so you know I have a Dell version Nvidia GTX660m
this is what I wrote for the GTX660m but its the same process for the GTX560m. its a very simple process.
if you are running windows 8 you need to disable driver sig. -
Thank you very much for your responses djan84 and batfinks!
I downloaded your driver djan84 and it seems to have installed correctly. I ran the Windows Experience Index programme to see what if it's working correctly and it came out like this:
Processor: 7.1
Memory (RAM): 7.4
Graphics: 4.7
Gaming graphics: 6.2
Primary Hard Disk: 5.9
So I got an overall score of 4.7 which seems to be very low.
I decided to download WoW and run it to see if it works. And it did, but I realised that my laptop had stealth-mode on... So while it was playing the introduction video I decided to click the stealth-mode LED to turn it off and the computer screen went black and started making weird noises so I turned it off. I turned the laptop and stealth-mode back on and the introduction video works fine, it's just a bit laggy.
Any ideas? -
its been known for the m15x to lock into power saving mode, and it seems only way to resolve the issue was to reset the bios, remove the cmos battery from the motherboard and replace it back...
but before doing that just test the system making sure you can get it out of power saving mode and vice versa. if you are able to do that, all good and well. make sure its out of power saving mode and rerun the wei score and see if the scoring improves. if it does then try and play a game and see how you get on.
please report back so we can help further. -
Thanks for your response batfinks!
If I take the m15x out of stealth-mode and try and run WEI then it crashes.
So if I make sure the power saving LED is on the dim glow instead of the bright glow, then it's okay to go ahead and reset BIOS and resit the CMOS battery? -
Alienware-L_Porras Company Representative
Laptopvideo2go is always the best place to get those.
-
you can reset the bios by removing the cmos battery at anytime, as for WEI crashing that will be due to the driver nodoubt.
-
Thanks Alienware-L_Porras, I will bare that in mind for future reference.
batfinks would it still be the driver's fault if WEI works on stealth-mode just not on normal mode? -
Sorry for the delay, I have a cold at the moment and went to bed early for a change...
to answer your question, WEI tests four components, cpu, memory, graphics and hardrive. So I ask at what point does the wei crash ?
this will indicate were the problem lies, if you are unsure please rerun the test and watch it and it will say what test it is running and when the crash occurred.
knowing this info will help us further to help you resolve the issue at hand. -
Hi batfinks, no worries!
If the laptop has stealth-mode on then it runs fine but if I turn stealth-mode off then it crashes right after I press the WEI test button. -
erm try this, goto C:\Windows\Performance\WinSat\DataStore and delete all the .xml files, this will basically reset wei score then rerun the test. Making sure you are not in stealth mode. and let us know how it gets on.
-
Hi batfinks,
I turned off stealth-mode and deleted the .xml files. I then ran WEI and the laptop crashed immediately. I've just loaded the laptop back up, in stealth-mode, and WEI ran normally.
I'm planning on reseating the CMOS battery and resetting BIOS. Do you still think this is the best course of action? -
it will not hurt.
when you switch on your laptop is stealth mode automatically on ?
have you checked under power management that you are not running in a reduced power plan forcing stealth mode to be on ?
have you installed windows media player ? (may sound a silly question) but not having it installed causes a ton of issues with WEI not running/crashing.
is the driver for the graphics card a recent version ? as I still believe this is the cause of the failing on wei scoring.
oh and what are the temps like on both the cpu and gpu please. -
Hi batfinks,
Stealth mode isn't automatically on when I turn the laptop on. If stealth mode was off when it was turned off/ crashes then it will be off when I turn it on, and it won't load the log in screen.
I'm on the 'Balanced' power plan.
I finished the installation of Windows Media Player but the laptop still crashes if I have stealth mode off and try to run WEI.
The graphics driver version that I'm using is 320.49 which is apparently the most up to date one.
I downloaded 'RealTemp' for the GPU temp and 'GPU Temp' for the GPU one. It has given me a temperature of around 48-52 for the different cores of the CPU and 42 for the GPU. Edit: the maximum temperature reached so far is 57, 56, 55, 57.
My friend said he will reseat the CMOS battery in a couple of days. -
resetting the bios is a simple thing to do, simply switch off the laptop and disconnect the power cable.
turn over and remove the battery
once the battery is removed press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to ensure a full power drain.
remove the base panel, 2 small screws.
then simply remove the cmos battery.
at this point I usually wait 60secs or I press and hold the power button again for 30secs
then I put it all back together again. jobs done. -
Hi batfinks,
I followed your instructions for removing the CMOS battery. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have made a difference: WEI still won't run unless it's on stealth-mode and the laptop still randomly crashes when I use it.
If the power cable is connected to the computer it sometimes doesn't like getting to the log in screen when booting up, it just says illuminated black... But if I unplug it and restart the computer then after the windows loading bit the screen goes proper black before the log in screen appears (no back glow) and then it works fine! So odd...
Hmm :/
Edit: Strangely the icons on the bottom right of the task bar are not not displaying correctly... The wifi one isn't appearing but the laptop is connected to the net. -
did the laptop behave like this before you installed the driver for the NVidia 560m ?
-
batfinks thanks for your continued support,
I used to have a 240m and the laptop wouldn't even boot properly, instead it would just have some LEDs flashing instead of booting.
So I swapped it for a 560m. It was functioning very basic before the installation of the driver and it would turn on normally but I think it did crash randomly like how it does now. Once I installed the driver I managed to play WoW the other day and it seemed to work fine, just a bit laggy as is on stealth-mode but crashes if I turned it off. -
have you installed all the drivers for the laptop such as the chipset driver intel ibex I think its called... when the cpu isn't in stealth mode the cpu runs at the correct speed.
so if the laptop is crashing when the cpu is running at the correct speed, I suppose it could be overheating.....
not having the laptop infront of me and having to second guess makes it hard to find out exactly whats wrong...
try removing the driver for the 560m and allow the laptop to use the windows generic driver and try and run wei score under that please and see if that works -
I went on the DELL website and downloaded all the others drivers that I haven't installed (minus the 260m graphics ones) but it hasn't made a different... Laptop still crashes if I try and load the net or run WEI if it's not on stealth-mode.
I will try uninstalling the graphics driver and running WEI like you said.
Edit/ update: I uninstalled the graphics driver and ran WEI when not in stealth-mode. It failed the first time and said there was a problem with the processor... So I ran it a second and third time and there wasn't a problem... I ended up with:
Processor: 7.1
Memory: 7.4
Graphics: 1
Gaming graphics: 1
Primary hard disk: 5.9 -
hmm interesting....
problem with the processor, first test wei runs is for the cpu.
but having said that the wei ran the 2nd time and passed.
so must be a gpu driver issue try using a older driver and just copy over the nvdmn.dll file or whichever one you edited. and see if it will install correctly that way -
Will do! NVIDIA DRIVERS 320.00BETA Is the one I'm installing now. Or do you think I should go for an earlier one?
-
yes, do not use beta drivers till we sort this out. erm got for driver version 314.07 that's actually a good driver det. see how you get on with that.
-
Yeah that beta one I picked didn't work. I'll give that one a go now!
-
I copied my nvdmn and ListDevices files into 314.07 but when I tried to run setup.exe it said some files were missing... It must need to be modified differently... I'll give that a go now.
-
Urgh I tried editing the nvdmn and ListDevices file but it just won't work! When I run the setup.exe it says there's no compatible hardware... I just won't understand what I'm doing wrong!
This is what I did:
In nvdmn, below:
%NVIDIA_DEV.1251.04BA.1028% = Section115, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_04BA1028
I added:
%NVIDIA_DEV.1251.02A2.1028% = Section118, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_02A21028
And at the end of nvdmn, below:
NVIDIA_DEV.1251.04BA.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M "
I added:
NVIDIA_DEV.1251.02A2.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M "
And on ListDevices, below:
DEV_1251&SUBSYS_04901028 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M "
I added:
DEV_1251&SUBSYS_02A21028 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M "
What am I doing wrong? -
only pre-mod driver I can find for PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_02A21028 is dated 2011... that's version 268.51
what os are you running
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drive...28&whql=0&lang=0&orderby=version&dir=desc&os= -
I tried adding that inf file to it but it didn't work... But I literally just got it working!! Turns out there are four places that I needed to modify the nvdmn file! Just about to restart *fingers crossed*
-
Ran WEI and it crashed. Booted up and got the Blue Screen of Death with a nvlddmkm error. I was doing some research earlier and that popped on a forum I think.
-
did you clean out the wei old scoring as posted earlier ? before running the new wei test ?
-
Deleted [repeated post]
-
Indeed I did, but it imediately crashed after running WEI.
I'm gonna try following this and see if it's any good: Fixing the Nvlddmkm Error (Display driver has stopped responding)
Edit: step 6 involves messing with the registry :/ What do you think? -
give it a shot, other have said step 6 resolved the issue
-
Okay, I will give it a go in the morning.
So you would follow 1. Goto registry editor (start -> run -> regedit)
2. Navigate yourself to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlGraphicsDrivers (make sure GraphicsDrivers is highlighted).
3. Right click -> New -> DWORD (32-bit) value -> Name it: TdrDelay -> double click it -> Set it to A (hexadecimal) or 10 (decimal).
But what about the 32-bit bit? I use 64 bit Windows 7... Does it matter? -
on that one im unsure, btw you are uninstalling the NVidia driver correctly before installing newer drivers correct ? and not simply installing over the older driver
-
Indeed, I am uninstalling them and then restarting the laptop before installing new drivers.
-
so are still unable to install working drivers?
-
hes managed to get the driver installed but now when he runs WEI it crashes straight away even after resetting WEI scores..
but the funny thing is it passed WEI in stealth mode.
and his temps seem fine -
Sorry for the delayed response, I've had family visiting and so have been quite busy!
As batfinks said: I have managed to modify the drivers and get them to install... But the problems arise when I turn stealth mode off and try and run something like WEI, or load the net, or a video. It seems that anything taxing on the system just causes the laptop to either lock or go black. batfinks also mentioned the temps are fine which is true... Hmm :/ -
have you tried any other drivers?
-
I've installed 320.49, 320.18, 320.00 and 314.07... I also tried one which was around 280 but I couldn't get it to work.
-
Does the 560m require a different PSU to the 150W one that comes with the m15x?
-
no the psu should be fine unless it faulty let me work you up a set of up to date driver and see if it works with that
PM SENT........ -
Maybe try reseating/repaste the GPU card? It sounds like its worth a try - especially if parts of the GPU die isn't covered with thermal paste by accident - have tried that myself, resulting in that exact behaviour. Hope you get it solved!
