I upgraded my M15x with this Dell Precision "M6800 AMD ATI FirePro M6100 Video Graphics Card P/N K5WCN 0K5WCN"

Install went well physicly. Cleaned up old paste and blew out all the dust in the fans and fins. New Arctic silver type paste on the gpu and reassembled with 1mm thermal pads recommended on here.
Used DDU v17.0.8.6 to remove all the old drivers and installed new Radeon drivers.
The GPU shows up as a HD8950.
Currently the sensor shows 60c while writing this.
I have not run any games on this since the upgrade, i have been way to busy, but i have opened a few Facebook videos and YouTube videos and i can hear the video fan spool up during them.
After about 2m of watching youtube 1080/60 it just shuts off.
Now im no GPU pro but im assuming 60C is way to hot and creeping upto 100c while testing with a quick crypto miner test is bad.
Did i do something wrong? Wrong drivers? Bad placement of the pads? Before i tear into this again I want to pick your brains to get an idea what to look for.

I removed the GPU and put more paste inside. When i looked at the stamp the die made on the copper heat sink, it wasnt touching 100%. I added another rice sized drop and reinstalled. I have been running it hard for hours and everything seems to be stable again.
Feel free to close and or delete.Attached Files:

Good to read this is sorted. Just be careful not to crush the die with too much pressure. A number of users broke their M6000/6100s like this. Let's see if bigger brother W7170 works in M15x

Try using 0.5mm thermal pads. If you don't want to worry about contact issues, try using K5 Pro thermal paste. Just going to the 0.5mm thermal pads should help with the heat issues. Using more paste to make up for gap problems will result in flow issues (over time) if you have your laptop on any type of incline.

Might resort to liquid metal for this little furnace, got better contact with mine and idles lower however it doesn't behave.

I had good luck using liquid metal on a 980M but not on the cpu even though I have tried twice.
I just ordered some Thermal grizzly kryonaut to go on the W7170/M390X when it arrives.
