Okay, I am going to try for one last hoorah from my faithful M15x before I buy a new computer. I want to get her outputting 4K. Has anyone done this yet?
Right now, I have a GTX560M, and it doesn't seem like that will cut it. Too bad. I just got it this year. Looks like there are two paths: 7970M or 660M.
I'm split between going ATI or NVidia. I have been an NVidia fan for some time, but I've seen some negative stuff about the 660M and the M15x. Does anyone know how well the 7970M is supported under Linux? Will I still have HDMI audio over DisplayPort like I have with my NVidia card?
With the 660M I've seen lots of overheating issues. I am especially apprehensive about this as I'm running a 920XM as well. Any suggestions here? Should I continue with NVidia?
Current system: M15x, 920XM, 16GB, 1TB 560M, 2nd HDD.
Also, thank you all for making all these upgrades easy. I derived all the knowledge on acquiring, installing, and upgrading parts from this forum. By the way, I bought my 920XM from illusion0305 on eBay and they did a great job of making sure my part works.

hmm, not sure where you saw that 660m overheats. kepler is like the coolest nvidia out there. i have 670mx and it maxed out at 70c during nfs mw. other weaker games wont get it over 65

I think you should go the 7970M. The 660M is kinda underpowered in comparison. Also with the new gen coming out soon expect further price drops on this great GPU.

If you're going to be gaming 4k using a M15X, good luck, the current high-end desktop cards are struggling with that resolution, benchmarks found here:

The M15x's DP can't output that high, so it's all theory anyways.
