wow I sold my 6990m to one m15x user who had the 720qm along. HOwever, he suffered from throttles when o/c the 6990m and that was quite heavy. He had a 150w psu though, but same as you I just see.

What are your clocks for both gpu and cpu ? Any vantage score ?

    Cheers

Well today I tripped the PSU for the first time. I had been running previously with no issues while folding both cpu and gpu.

I had been running 23x across all 4 cores and it was stable at 73/60 on the tdp while with the GPU I ran it at 750/900 at 0.96V. Temps were max 65C on the GPU and 80C for the CPU. Ambient temps in my flat are 20C.

Then today I bumped up to 24x other settings equal which required 77/60 tdp the temps crept up to 83C on hottest core after 30 mins but otherwise fine then the PSU died with light not showing. I had no throttling before so I guess I just pushed the PSU too far.

I need a 240W to use this system properly it runs like a champ! Haven't got vantage as it costs money.

ok I just finished the install of a 560m from eurocom and I think I'm having temperature issues. I'm using a program called GPU Tepm. It seems the temp flucituates between 47c and 62c while idling. and I ran starcraft 2 in windowed mode and saw the temp go up to 99c. that's to high right?

ok so I took it apart and put it back together again with a little more thermal paste. reran windows experience index for a gpu score of 7.1 (only saw 6.8 first time) and the GPU temp topped out at 80C while it was running. this was a little more like what I was expecting.

Yea 80C isn't too much if the GPU is being maxed for a prolonged period of time. During normal gaming, at stock clocks, my temperature rarely goes above 70c.

Good to hear that you got it installed with no quirks beside a failed paste-job ;)

I played starcraft II for about 15 minute on ultra settings and the temp topped out at 89C.
I was reading through earlier posts and saw that you changed out the X bracket. I just used the X bracket and with the screws that came with the board. The screws that came with the board didn't have spacers on them, so I didn't crank them down too much. Should I go back and swap out the X bracket?

Nah, if it fits it fits. I swapped the x plate because I didn't notice that there was a set of screws in the package I got.

89c is too high though, unless you're doing like... 30c ambient temp. Make sure that the heat sink is screwed evenly onto the GPU.

ok did a third re-paste job. this time instead of using the arctic silver-5, I used some no name paste that I think came free with another processor. It is white and very liquidy. Well it seems like all is fine now. My temp is idling at around 38C and when I played Trine on the highest settings was @ 75C. Metro 2033 high detail but at 720p topped out at 75C. The final test was Starcraft II for about 15 minutes It topped out at 80C.
Ok, now how do I overclock it? I have never overclocked anything and I don't even know where to start.

Well following your excellent instructions here I have successfully overclocked my GPU. I have started with your 865/750/1730 setting and found them to be stable for my GPU as well now my windows experience index score is 7.2 and I ran Metro 2033 for 20 minutes at high detail and 1080p and had a high temp of 82C.

So how good is battery life for those of you that got this laptop?
off the charger both with playing a game and trying to get the most of juice out of it while browsing Web and typing paper.
I was looking at upgrading my gpu in the near future but still need some bat life.

The GTX560M does not affect battery life.

You made a horrible choice in laptop if a primary concern is battery longevity

So if I read this right you can't oc the CPU and gpu for 940
Does the same hold true for 920?

Reason being is that I plan to put a nvidia gtx 560m into this puppy but would upgrade cpu in the future.

Before I buy this I wanted to double check and make sure its legit:

    New Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M 1.5G GDDR5 Video Card N12E | eBay

The post says that it does not fit the m15x and m17x. Is that just misinformation? Or is this card on the link not the right one? It looks like its the real deal to me so I dont know why it would say that.

I installed the eucom 560M fine but had issue tryingto find the nvdm.inf since I have a few display drivers downloading. It appears in both C:\nvidia and program files\nividia corporation.

Which inf file do I update and wher should it be located.

Right now all my computer is recognizing is the stabdard vga graphics. not the nvidia and after i made the changes to the nvdm in 285 c:\nividia it still won't install the drivers.

I'm downloading 296.73 nvidia driver. What do I need to after i install it to get my card working? thanks

    Ok, I got it working.

I had two weird problems. First was that it was using the standard vga adapter also I updated the nvdm.inf. Second was that when I tried to install 293 it couldnt find the my card.

For future reference I unistalled the 285 drivers but kept 285 in the C:\Nvidia folder and updated the nvdm.inf file there. then ran the setup and 285 installed and everything works!

Then I installed the driver and not it works!

when I first loaded it I can tell windows 7 worked nicer.

but so far on battlefield 3 I havent noticed anything. may even see MORE lag.

I tried to install the latest drivers (295) but it cant find my hardware. And looking at nvdm.inf its diffreent than 285:

Any idea what I have to do to get 295 working with my 560M?

    hey guys,

i recently bought the 560m from eurocom and installed it. got it working pretty easily. but now i'm having one issue: HEAT.

In high end games, my temperatures get to 90 degrees Celsius. This does not seem too unusual in my opinion, considering that some people play at over 100 degrees regularly. But my issue is that the card's core threshold temperature is set to 90 degrees. At 90 degrees, my card shuts down and my computer cuts off power. So I'm really in need of help :/...

I see two possible solutions thusfar:
    1) Somehow I need to get my card cooler when I play games (at idle, it sits around 36-43 degrees Celsius).

    OR

    2) I need to raise the threshold temperature. But I do NOT know how I can accomplish this....

Please help, I would really like to see this 560m working better in my M15x!

PS: All the games run perfect on full settings. But as soon as the temperature hits 90, WHAM, power off..

90°C is way to much for your card, make sure the heatsink fits properly, reapply the thermal paste (make sure to properly clean the heatsink and die with rubbing alcohol or similar) and make sure the fins of the cooler are free of dust.

Well, the 90 degrees occurs when i play Skyrim with my GPU on factory clock settings: 775/1250/1550. I feel like the memory clock factory setting seems way too high... I tried messing around with these settings and got better temperatures. But they still tended to heat up. The game I am currently playing is Skyrim. What should I set my clocks too for stable temps + good quality gameplay?

EDIT: And yeah. When I installed the card, I made sure to apply some arctic silver 5. And I cleaned off excess thermal compound on the heat sink, though I did not use rubbing alcohol or anything. I just got it off with a mildly damp paper towel.

YES! Thank you. I'm buying some of those thermal pads RIGHT NOW. I haven't replaced the old ones. All I replaced was the thermal compound. I'm hoping my temps will go down with those pads.

UPDATE: My temperatures peak at about 75 degrees Celsius after changing my clock settings. My cards "factory settings" are 775/1250/1550. I think that this is a bit of an overclock. AT FACTORY SETTINGS! which is dumb. But I noticed that if I drop the 1250 memory clock down to 700 for skyrim, it runs at 60 fps and maxes at about 70 degrees Celsius. For less demanding games, such as League of Legends, I can drop the memory clock to 1100 and it runs perfectly at over 60 fps and at about 75 degrees Celsius.

So I think the pre-set clock settings were too high, and it was causing my card to overheat. Does this sound like a plausible explanation?

All I gotta do is find the right clock settings for each game I play. Sound about right? :)

By the way, I noticed that the fujipoly premium thermal pads have a thermal conductivity of 6 W/mk. I found this on ebay:

    Extreme Performance Thermal Pad 30 x 30 x 1.0mm | eBay

It's thermal conductivity is 12 W/mk. Twice as much as Fujipoly's. But the pad's are smaller and cut into squares, so I'd have to do some cutting to get those into the right shapes. Should I go with the one's on ebay at 12 W/mk? Will it make a difference?

Also, are there other similar pads with 12 W/mk thermal conductivities? Or even higher than that? If so, could you shoot me in the right direction, because I can't seem to find any

EDIT: Also, how does thickness effect the pads? Does thicker = more cooling? Or is it just based on what size you need for your parts? If it IS based on size, then what thickness should i get for my M15x?

sure this is the 560m eurocom card hw id PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_ 1251&SUBSYS_ 02A21028

on the older drivers (.inf)they would read like this
    %NVIDIA_DEV. 1251.06% = Section060, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_02A21028

new inf display as (under NTamd64.6.1)which is for win 7 device ids, but i also added it to vist
    %NVIDIA_DEV. 1251. 02A2.17C0% = Section002, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_02A21028

and last the string added at the bottom of inf
    NVIDIA_DEV. 1251. 02A2.17C0 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M"

also ekmek or any one else who update there drivers can you let me know if you see any kind of mouse pointer stutter/lag with these driver?

Alright, sounds good to me. I'm getting some pads. I think that's my only problem.

Question: Does anybody know what the max fan speed for the M15x is? in RPM? My temperatures are getting high and I'd like to know how far I can push these fans for the sake of cooling down my system while gaming. (EDIT: nevermind. I found out, the CPU fan is 5100 RPM max and GPU fan is 4800 RPM max)

EDIT: Also, what idle GPU temperatures do you guys get? and what gaming temperatures do you get? I'm worried, because my card seems to overheat unless I underclock it :/... or is that normal?

    I bought that one.

I did not buy new thermal paste. I used the original pads.

you do need to update your driver

you may have to change screws on the heat sink which was the biggest pain - it had locking washiners and using a small knife was the best way to get them off.

Well, heating-wise, at factory clock settings, the card looks beautiful while playing games like Skyrim, but it overheats in a matter of seconds. I'm definitely recommending the most high quality thermal pads and thermal paste that you can get.

Arctic Silver 5 is good for thermal paste. But I got some IC Diamond 7 because it's supposedly 3-5 degrees cooler. And up to 5-7 degrees cooler under full load.

For thermal pads, apparently fujipoly thermal pads from FrozenCPU.com are good. I got a set of thermal pads directly from Eurocom (upgradeyourlaptop on ebay) coming in the mail now.

I will keep you guys informed on how well these items cool my GPU.

You can always underclock your card and get insane graphics quality still; you just gotta find good settings that will give you the best quality without overheating. The 560m is so powerful compared to my old 260m, and you had a 240m, so it should be even more of an improvement (though I'm not 100% sure it will be compatible, you'll have to wait for someone else to answer that).

If these pads and IC Diamond 7 cool down my system enough to run on the card's factory settings, I can run Skyrim on full ultra at 60 FPS. It's an insane card.

Would the Radeon 6970m or 6990m be better heat wise? They are more expensive, but if it ensure it lasts longer than it could worth it.

Honestly, I have no idea. I'll let you know about my results with the thermal pads probably next week, whenever they arrive. The Eurocom customer support guy whom I spoke with told me that he thinks my overheating problem is due to the fact that I did not cover every spot on the card that I am supposed to cover.

Here's the picture he gave me: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/56470267/560M.jpg

I only had the 2 long strips covered, with old mushy thermal pads. I'm hoping that he's right. He said the card, under FULL load, never exceeded 75 degrees Celsius in testing. So hopefully, my problem is the pads. I'll be sure to let you know.

Considering this card needs a driver modification, how will it run under linux? Is the same modification possible with the nvidia linux driver?

a new driver already. maybe that will fix why my performance seems worse with the new card - 295 was bad.

Seriously, Civ5 and battlefield 3 seem worse since I installed this new card. Is there a way I can check if performance is worse?

well you could run benchmarks between the various driver versions out there - and roll back to that driver that performs best
