M15x Problem/Technical Question thread

I have a "ripley" M15x with 9800GT.

I've loaded Win7 64 bit on it, everything seems to be working ok: 9800 with 186.xx drivers, intel integrated gfx, alienfx, wireless, stealth mode, bluetooth, etc, however, I have never been able to get the IR thing on the front working - I was going to use a remote with the laptop plugged into my HDMI TV.. - Has anyone else got this working?

Looking at the device manager, I see 2 un recognised base system devices:

1) PCI bus 10, device 9, function 2:

Any idea what these are and does anyone else have the drivers to get the remote control working?

 

I recently had to call Dell bc my laptop wasn't booting up and the only thing that was turning on was the keyboard and flashing number lock , scroll lock and caps lock. The Dell rep said my motherboard is fried and they're going to send a tech guy to fix it. Is there anything I should ask the tech guy to check to make sure that the damage to the motherboard hasn't caused damage to other parts of my laptop. My warranty covers everything so I just want to make sure that my laptop is back to normal and that all th right parts are being replaced. ThankS a lot!

i'm pretty sure the tech won't know. but the fllashing error light is a code that lets the phone tech knows which part is out. also have a printed service manual handy because you just never know how qualified the tech really is.

 

Ok so today i get back from work and start my comp up and load up vent to talk to some ppl about playing a quick game. and just as im switching vent channels the speakers start making a buzzing noise and the system crashes(for the first time). I shut down by holding the power button down and then start normally. Then i do a simple power drain not a bios battery pull. I then start up and load up vent and change vent again no problem this time and then i play a game for 40 mins after that i exit out of vent and the buzzing happens again and crashes. Now i just did another battery pull with the bios battery unplugged and now I've booted up what could be causing this problem if so should i be contacting tech support and asking for a replacement system.

i installed the screensaver from inap

but when i would come out of the screensaver my taskbar would disappear and now would like to delete the screensaver. i deleted it via add/remove programs but it still shows in the screensaver list and if i try to reinstall it says it already exists. what am i missing?

NM: rebooting fixed the error.

 

I need some help ! some times my Laptop Screen suddently flashing red colour ( somes times is blue ) , it's happen when i'm playing game or just surfing web ( random ) , the music still on ( if i'm playing video on Media Player ) but i can't press any key on a keyboard . The only thing to do is press a power button to restart .

Please help ? is it a hardware problem ?

 

driver issue perhaps?

try reinstalling the driver?
uninstall using control panel and run CCleaner reg clean
reboot and try reinstalling drivers

otherwise it may be a hardware prob... the sound continues as normal, doesn't loop?

 

doesn't loop mate .... somes times my computer freeze , i try alt + f4 or crt + alt + del but i can't heard any sound .... ! i'll try to install dell driver , i'm still using 258.96 .

 

Hi there, the other day my m15x blue screened and when it had restarted there was an issue making command centre not work. I decided to uninstall command centre and when I did (I have tried a few times now) I was presented with the error code below:

The installed then gets stuck on 'removing backup files'. The installer then needs to be closed. After this process Command Centre appears in my programs folder as well as in the start menu but none of the features work - I can open command centre but no buttons do anything. The program does not appear in add/remove programs within control panel so it is not possible to do a full uninstall.

This is quite an issue for me as without the software the lights on my m15x are permanently on and they are not really suitable for all settings.

I just got my replacement system from Dell. I didn't want to clone my disk, so I popped my old hard drive out of the broken machine and put it in the new system. One is a seagate, the other a western digital. Do you think I will have any issues with dell, when i mail it back?

Not sure specifics since you did not post system specs - just to be clear, if you have an Area-51/Legacy m15x then the current command center will not function with it.

If this is a Dell/Alienware system, then try running the installer for 2.5.54.0 of Command Center:
Drivers and Downloads - Public Sector

Dell is not going to bother with the HDD having old data on it. If it were my system, I would stick with the replacement system's HDD. imaging the drive can be tedious however I'd rather have a new HDD vs the original. Whatever you decide to do, be sure to wipe the HDD you send back.

 

Hi there, sorry, I have the newest ver. of the m15x, i7 720, 4gb, 500, nvidia 260m.

That is the version of command center I have been attempting to install/uninstall/whatever is happening. I just get error messages when trying to install/run the program - as mentioned above.

 

Only suggestion then would be to:

1. Uninstall Command Center via Programs and Features Control Panel
2. Reboot the system into Safe Mode (F8 @ BIOS Prompt until you see the recovery menu - select Safe Mode)
3. Once in Safe Mode, run CCleaner's registry module - remove any traces it reports. See this link for download and info on CCleaner - CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

4. Once CCleaner has been run, exit Safe Mode by selecting 'Restart'.
5. Once back at the desktop, run the installer you downloaded for Command Center (from support.dell)

If the system is still throwing an error then you need to contact support.

 

Bursthead, call and talk to your replacement rep, they let me keep my old drive. Tell them you're worried about your data being compromised and ask what they recommend. My rep told me they don't reuse hdd's anyway so I could just keep mine. Good luck!

 

Ok well ive been having a problem for a while now with the m15x, not sure if the solutions already on here but i at least can't find it.

My issue is that in times of graphical stress, i dunno a raid boss in wow multiple person encounter that kind of thing, the system seems to freak out and downclock to stealth mode further reducing frames in what are already demanding situations, you can guess how annoying this might be. The stealth mode is not registered as on but if i turn it on in the usual way by pressing the button nothing changes in terms of frames etc but on pressing it again it deactivates and frames return to normal. Its as though the system turns it on itself, ive tried a system restore etc which hasnt helped. So i'm open to any ideas, i dont have BIOS A08 though if thats a fix because i cant seem to get dells ingenius download manager to do anything, so help with that would also be appreciated, have registered have a list etc just states i havnt selected a file and closes. Might just be me being dense but any help would be appreciated on both matters.

Deleted cookies and found browser download 1^ for me being dense, so downloading driver issue fixed but still would like help with stealth mode issue as driver was not a fix.

 

The thing is, because the reinstall of CC failed at the end with the error message posted above, it sort of installs but does not appear in the programs and features menu. Therefore there is no way for me to uninstall the program other that delete the folders and files. I appear to be ed

 

Question peeps if a game freezes the whole system and all you here is a repeatable sound reverberating in your ear from the last thing you heard in game and you need to hard boot what do you guys think it could be......

I want to buy some new DDR3 RAM for my M15X. I have 2x2GB 1066 today and want to get 2x4GB with the best clock possible. Which memory do you guys recommend?

 

So finally after getting cancelled by the local dell techs three times, they showed up and replaced my motherboard on my m15x. Two people showed up, one was a trainee and the other was supervising him. I'm located in Lubbock, Tx for school, and these two people didnt look like techs at all. The new guy had never seen an alienware before, and the lady said that she worked on them all the time. I felt sorry for the other peoples alienwares she worked on, she was just abusive to taking my alienware apart, i had to keep telling her that certain pieces still had screws in them when she was trying to remove them. After observing them take apart my baby and putting it back together i was more than certain things were wrong. He guy stripped at screwed to remove the back plate, cracked a hole which holds that screw because he tighted it to hard, and my cd/dvd wont take my cds bc its no parallel with the hole. call them back to come and fix it but no one answered. Dell is for sure getting a call from me once i get out of class.

 

any 1333mhz ddr3 ram will do... 1600mhz isn't supported unfortunately :s

it sounds exactly like the throttling issue and yes, a08 does fix it

if you can't get past dell's silly downloader thingy, try clearing out all your cookies using CCleaner, instead of selecting dell's downloader, select use web-browser.

either that or use another web-browser which hasn't been to the dell support site, either IE, firefox, opera, chrome...

but first clear your cookies, chances are it will let u download. you need a blank cd or usb stick, i used a cd. i recommend you plug in the powerpoint before flash and make sure your battery has some charge... perhaps i'm a little paranoid but i've had a power failure during a bios flash before... worst luck in the world.

 

Ok not sure what went wrong last time but aparantly i hadnt downloaded A08, but now im at the stage of creating the bootable disc, my choice would be to burn it to a disc but its not accepting the dvd-R's i have, gonna assume it needs a CD for whatever reason but anyway, if i create an iso and use somthign like daemontools to run it will that work just as well?

Apparantly it wont thats rather annoying time to run around looking for a flash drive

Ok update, A08 applied didnt appear to change anything, maybe it helped a little as in it was slightly later in the game before the frames went kaput but yeah they did and it was fixed by hitting stealth twice again so, really not sure what the issue is and i really would rather not call for a replacement but its been near a year so...

Of course it will -- if you're running the 64-bit version of Win 7. Click Start, then right click on Computer, click Properties and check System Type. It will show "64-bit Operating System" if you have the 64-bit version. Can't imagine you'd have anything else with a new M15x.

no, thats the color quality and not your windows version. you have only those 2 options no matter what win version you have.

 

As Inap says, those define the color depths available with your card and drivers under Win 7. Without a lot of esoteric detail about color depths, Windows 7 colors and themes work best when you use 32-bit color depth ("True Color"), which is required for aero effects. The 32-bit reference in this instance is to the number of color bits (and related data) per pixel and is at least 16.7 million colors.

 

Another question. How about refresh rate: 59Hz vs 60Hz , which one better?

 

its the same, but the 260m always reports 59hz for some reason, while the ati cards reports the full 60hz.

hi,i'm a newbie and i'm sorry to post this question but can somebody somehow help me this one? everytime i turn on my M15x this message always prompts on my screen: Catalyst Control Centre host application has stopped working..

 

#Anyone with any further information on my post A08 throttling issue? I've contacted dell and alienware support but theyre being as helpful as always so im gonna give it a few days and call.

 

Had this problem as well...I was using the 258.96 nvidia driver....Try uninstalling it then download the 260 driver on Dell website, see how it goes.

My problem seems to be gone for now.

 

I really did not remember what did I do? Maybe I used defragment. Can be I turned off by power button, that made this error.

I see on Dell website. They just have 257.37 nvida driver????

Need advice re replacement system/refurb issues

My M15 crashed on the first day i got her, has been a problem ever since. I have had the following repairs done: windows reinstall, power supply, wireless card, hard drive, and now i still have random blue screen crashes, plugged in not charging, and wireless disconnects.

I have been on the tech support merry go round for about 6-8 weeks and recently had a refurb system show up. I didnt want this system (I feel i should get a new one) and to top it off, it has a dead usb port, is black and scratched. (I paid the extra c-note for red)

I am at my wits end, i now have 2 broken a/w laptops and just got a call today from the same aw rep i spoke to originally when i recieved the bunk refurb unit, he is asking the same retarded questions he did over a week ago...saying the paperwork "found its way back to him". I keep getting told they are escalating my case....but they are just passing me around the office. I am essentially starting over again, and i really feel that i am getting the run around.

I know i have seen a link somewhere to a high up exec. I NEED some help here....maybe light a fire under someones @$$

Any input is appreciated.
