    Would a 260m gtx from a m17x R1 fit in an m15x?

As far as I'm aware, same exact mxm type and form factor (not some proprietary part type).

    Hey Mark, isn't the 240m in the m15x 512mb?

The 260 from the M17x is the same as the one offered in the M15x, so yes it would work.

In fact, any MXM 3.0b card would fit physically in the system. Just need the microcode added in the BIOS in order for it to work.

    So far, the gpu's confirmed to work are: 240, 260, 280, 5870.

I wonder if the 285 would work. I know it is basically just a cherry-picked 280 but it was a very good card too.

Yep, very few of us got first run gt 240m's with 1GB onboard (first m15x releases). GPU-Z, CPU-Z, and Vantage confirm 1GB along with games as well. I don't know how much it help's on a 240m but it probably doesn't hurt for higher resolution and aa/af

The 240 is weak sauce for sure so I don't think 512MB of VRAM makes any difference.

    More of a collector's item, I suppose :) lol

I just switched to 10.6 alpha. It seems to be ok for now, didn't notice any performance increase or decrease in Crysis Wars, or any other game for that matter, but I haven't tested it enough yet.

And hemi - I am still using the official 10.3's.

That's what I want to know. Have others besides Crylo tried the 10.6 Alpha? Are they really stable? Do they bench better, the same, or worse? Before I try them I'd like some a little more feedback on the them. I probably can't try them myself until the weekend anyway.

So far I haven't noticed any significant performance gains, although Crysis Wars Seems to run smoother when there are a lot of explosions on screen at one time than it did before. I haven't done any benchmarking yet but from what I've heard the 10.6's bench lower than 10.3's.

    Curious, do you have CCC?

I tried 10.6 but didn't notice any kind of difference over 10.3 in games and in benchmark.

Are you using 10.6 on your M17x? I think they are asking about M15x's with 5870s in them.

Thanks for stating the obvious. My point is that your hardware is different from the thread topic so though it's great to have input on 5870 and 10.6 driver it's not necessarily relevant to this thread.

Yeah it is relevant, I really don't understand your reasoning behind this post. How does the model laptop I have matter when discussing a GPU driver that can be used on both my 4870's and the 5870's people are currently installing in their M15x? lol

Maybe its in reference to CCC, which does not work on any M15x with a 5870 in it yet.

I downloaded and installed the official 10.3's from ATI.

I didn't select any custom install or anything just used the default express (or whatever it's called) setup.

I have a question regarding heat with the 5870 GPU.

Compared to the stock 260gtx does it run noticeably hotter/louder? And when not gaming, and simply web browsing or watching a dvd/divx movie, is it quiet and cool or do the fans amp up?

I am thinking of getting a m15x and upgrading to a 5870 down the road, only thing holding me back is heat/noise. I will upgrade the thermal paste right away to OCZfreeze if that makes much of a difference to stock paste used.

did a real sloppy job with the thermal paste, but idling around 57-60 and gaming at max is 88. probably redo the paste tomorrow.

At present i've a 285M GTX in my M15x, and the temps are okay. Do I have to pay attention to something special if I install the mobile ATI 5870?

    - Do i need the ATI 5870 from the clevo notebooks?
    - What do I have to change at the cooling in addition?

Sorry for my english, but i'm from germany :D

    Really bad news, fellas.

I have been informed that the M15x will NOT be refreshed with 5870's. My source is very trustworthy and has close ties with the situation.

I can't explain why unless that person gives me the ok. I just thought you guys should know.

The one thing that we lucked out on is that Dell released the BIOS with the 5870 microcode. So you can still put one in there but there will never be any official support from Dell.

Yeah, if he wanted he could start charging $500 per card and they would sell.

Don't think he would do that though.

I gotta say, Dell really dropped the ball with the M15x. The way I have mine setup right now it is by far the ultimate 15" gaming system.

I just can't believe they botched it so bad.
