@The Revelator
Nice clocks on your 5850, im looking at your pics and i cannot see the voltage, so did you up the voltage from 1000 to what like 1100 which is only a .1 incease right?
-
I bet the 3100+ runs were on 1.15V ... this gets pretty hot
Really nice post Rev, would rep you if I could. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
At those high-end clocks (900+/1100), voltage is at 1.15v. It's the core that usually needs the extra voltage; you can run the memory at 1100 on most cards with voltage at 1.0v-1.05v. Some 5850's can o/c memory to 1200+, but mine struggles above 1100, regardless of the voltage.

I honestly don't mind 720p, especially on a screen smaller than 15.6". I really got the 1080p on my M15x for the hell of it, didn't really *need* it but man games sure do look prettier.
If I were doing this again (the M15x is literally a placeholder for 6 months until I order my M18x) I'd have gotten the M14x if it were available. Seems like a better deal overall. The M15x has been locked in the old pricing structure (with the old, first-gen i7's). You're getting a better CPU for a few hundred less with the M14x, and at this point you can't configured the M15x to come with anything other than a 5730m. For one thing, why even buy the laptop with THAT videocard? It seems to me they're making it incredibly unattractive so they can phase it out, but I could be wrong. I just can't see somebody paying $1549 for a 1.73Ghz i7 and an AMD 5730m when for $1199 they can get a 2.0Ghz i7 and a much faster videocard. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Can't imagine why anyone would purchase a new M15x with a 5730m at this point. If you're attracted to the model, get a properly configured refurbished one from the Outlet (920-940xm/5850m-460m). Otherwise, just recognize that you missed the opportunity to own a great laptop and move on to the current offerings.

@Rev - Yeah I got to start thinking about tools to pull out the bios of the 555 to see if the voltage can be modded on it. Im sure it can be done just gotta due my research... I hear the 555 runs cool so a few more electrons to the chips shouldn't hurt tooooo much (evil grin)

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
That poor M14x has no idea what's in store for it. All in the name of science. LOL.

Hey... if we just sat in front of these things.. we would just be "users"...
-
-
I bought the M15X over the M14X because there's a 20% off coupon for the Dell Outlet

Another perfectly good reason. Enjoy.

M14x is a joke as its now. But its got some potential...
waiting for M14x R2.............. -
Just a question to all peeps here, how much does one reckon the M15x in my sig is worth minus the SSD? No warranty left. All parts OEM, 460m is Clevo (which means higher clocks).
-
If I may ask something a tad off topic, how does that Clevo 460M perform? Any problems with it? I've heard using non Dell cards you can have problems, like the fans always being on high, or not being able to adjust the brightness.
-
-
@JWest The Clevo 460m GTX runs perfectly. Fans are automatic and the clocks speeds are the default M17x R3 speeds (the Dell 460m runs slower in the M15x). I don't use sound over DP but I have heard that if you install the Nvidia sound drivers from the Dell drivers they work but I don't know.
-
You throwing in the towel?!
I hope you've set your sights on the M17x R3 and not the new M14x... -
Yeah but probably not for another few months. If you do a search on the Dell site for the 485m GTX, the M17x R3 comes up so hopes are high for the top GPU. I'm in the UK so I may be able to wrangle a bit more dough from this
-
If I could gather the cash I'd very probably upgrade to the M17x now that they've brought the size down a little bit (was the only reason I avoided the R1/R2, they were colossal). In particular the height. Wouldn't mind a soft-touch case either... I'm so tired of having to rub fingerprints and spots of grime off my lid every time I put it away. Going to look into the possibilities once I get back to good old England. Though I do still love this machine as much as the day it was beamed down from space via UPS. -
They weren't offering them unfortunately. Some users here have managed to put the 485m GTX in their M17x R3's but haven't got the 3D to work as the bios only allows for the 460m to access the 120Hz. I guess all will be good when Dell offers the 485m then I would be all over that like a kid with a new toy.
-
Seems the M15x has changed anyway (at least in the UK) as the only GPU option on the site is a 460M .... (I've just spected and brought one), The M17 is too big for my needs and the 14 smaller than i'd like ...

no way m14x is better

Alienware m15x vs Alienware m14x
Intel Core 940XM Overclocking vs Intel Core 2920XM (Uhh..)
AMD Radeon 5870M 2GB vs NVIDIA GT555M 3GB (m15x wins this so easily)
16GB DDR3 Dual Channel at 1600MHz vs 8GB DDR3 (m15x)
1920 x 1200 FHD Glossy vs 1600 x 900 (m15x)
9-cell battery produces about 4 hours in Power Saver vs ???-cell battery that will last 5 hours (m14x, but performance so different is why battery is longer, LOL)
600GB Intel 320 SSD <Illegal Shop In My Country> vs 256GB SSD <My "Illegal Shop cannot do this for the m14x> (m15x is ownage)
Very heavy and bulky vs Not so bulky, but still heavy (m14x, but for we big and giant people we have no trouble lugging this around, and plus, "hardcore" gamers would sacrifice some portabiltiy for much more power, am I rite??)
Bigfoot Network Killer vs The same thing mentioned (Tie)
Verdict: The m15x boasts more power, durability and higher quality. It has a bigger and also HD screen, and the GPU, which m15x pwns m14x, is much more important for "hardcore gamers." It depends what you need. For you casual gamers who play stuff and adequate settings and want to game on the go, get the m14x. For those who want a hardcore solution that is cheap due to it's "oldness" get the m15x or the m17x (R2). Thank you for listening.
O.O I did a speech. -
