I have an Alienware M15X that I bought off of Ebay with a dead battery. In the BIOS, it says that my PSU (130W) is not the standard PSU. I was wondering if buying a 150W PSU will make my Alienware charge again. Thanks.

You can always paint it. I got nothing on the screen except I have two 900 screens and they are quite good.

    Very nice score!

I tried broken motherboard just to see and with only CPU, CPU fan, keyboard and a hdd attached. There is at least light on the alienware head/power button when I press it.
My current motherboard doesn't even get that far. Does that suggest its the motherboard that has failed?

Yes, but not just any 150w power supply. It has to be one with the correct signal wire.

Model NR DA150PM100-00 is a good part number.

Is there any way to get USB 3.0/3.1 on the M15X? That is the only reason I would consider getting a new laptop.

Remember though that at best you get about 100mb/s through expresscard. Still very fast. Most external HDDs cannot saturate it.

To All M15X 16GB Users. I have tried to install a HyperX Impact (1x8GB, 1600CL9) into my M15X. I have the i3 330M, and I know that the Max Memory Size is 8GB, but the 920XM has the the same requirement and many people have surpassed that. Any reasons on why my machine won't post?

Are you on the latest BIOS (A09)?

Do you get any flashing lights or beeps?

Did you try a power drain?

The only way to get 16GB is to use 8GB modules. Using just one 8GB module shouldn't matter. These were not available when the 1st Gen i3 - i7 mobile was introduced. I could not get 8GB modules to work in my M4500 with i7-M640.

May as well go to A09 BIOS. It is recommended by the folks here anyway.

I'm sure no one has got 16GB to work on anything other than an XM processor! And obviously on BIOS A09

    Excellent!
    http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/alienware-m15x/drivers?os=w764

BIOS is in the drivers section.

While you are are getting the BIOS get the system manual, it is very good.

There are 3 screws that hold on each vent. Two on the top underneath the panel above the keyboard and one under the bottom panel.

There are two screws that hold on that top panel above the keyboard. These are accessed from the bottom. The manual has step by step instructions with screw locations.

    Link to service manual:

The max ram per stick supported on dual core i3/i5/i7 (Arrandale) CPU's is 4GB
The max ram per stick supported on quad core i7 (Clarksfield) CPU's is 8GB(maybe 16GB but i wouldn't bet on that) QM, XM makes no difference here.

The max ram sticks supported on dual core i3/i5/i7 (Arrandale) CPU's is 2
The max ram sticks supported on quad core i7 (Clarksfield) CPU's is 4, again no difference in QM or XM

The only laptop for Clarksfield that i've owned and had 4 slots was Asus G73JH (JW/SW have them too)

If you install more than 2 sticks with a non-quadcore CPU, the laptop won't post.

DDR3L installed in DDR3 slot will just run at 1.5V, no issues there.
