to overclock the i7 Q740 cpu? I see throttlestop has the option to increase the multiplier. Has anyone ever tried this out? Results? Thanks!

You cannot overclock the multiplier using throttlestop however, you can increase the bus speed using fsb, more info here:

Thanks widezu...has anyone had success with this using my cpu?
-
Yes few people using the same cpu as you do (i7 740QM) have managed to overclock their FSB.

Well it ain't about the cpu, it depends on the motherboard. Think of your fsb (which is governed by the motherboard) as a river and the cpu is a dam. Currently your cpu has a max multiplier of x14 and it is locked, metaphorically, this means your dam has 14 spillways. The extreme cpus have a customisable amount of multi's so someone can open as much as they like (power providing). Setfsb allows your bus to run quicker ie your river to flow heavier despite how many spillways you have, this also speeds up your ram but its hardly noticeable.
Now my metaphorical sermon is over, hopefully this should help you better understand. -

I'm inclined to say no, I use setfsb when I had my 720qm, because it affects the overall speed the mobo functions at, there are some time sync issues such as 60hz being reported in games as 53.7 or something. I am an open source motion interpolation programmer so I just couldn't deal with that kind of stuff.
Is it possible..
