I finally upgraded from the 540m to the 920xm. I will post some before and after benchmarks soon. I can't seem to figure out how to overclock this thing from the bios, and I was wondering if someone could help me. I have the A09 bios on here already. When I check the bios screen, my CPU registers as the 920x, but I thought there was supposed to be an overclocking option. It's weird. I can see some options for the adjusting the RAM speed, but nothing for the CPU. I have the OEM version of the CPU, so there shouldn't be any funny business. It's 4am. I'm going to give up for tonight.

Use throttlestop to control multipliers, and provide more TDP/TDC to the CPU in order to boost higher.

Should look something like the attached pic and
TRL or Turbo Ratio Limits as follows:
1 core: x27
2 cores: x26
3 cores: x24
4 cores: x24
This results in a clock speed of 3.2Ghz which is pretty conservative but its what I use everyday for gaming.
I have managed to do some benchmarking at 3.6Ghz but its not 100% stable....looking at you prime95!Attached Files:

I used to have Throttlestop, but I didn't mess with it much. Are you guys saying that Throttlestop or something similar is the only way to overclock the extreme CPUs? If so, that seems a bit weird. I don't know why Intel would advertise them as being overclockable if you have to use a third party software to do it. There is no built-in function to do this? I can find and change the CPU clocks easily on my desktop computers from the BIOS, but I don't see options like that on my laptop.

M15x bios doesn't support overclocking. Deal with it, we all have and I've shown you how to set it up.

Thanks for the help. Since I started reading this website about 5 years ago, I have seen time and time again very friendly members helping others. In my third sentence, I said

My mistake. I misunderstood your intent. So far it looks like my Cinebench scores are worse when I overclock. I tried your Throttlestop recommendation and it crashed for me. I'll fiddle with it more later.

Well, as the pictures indicate, those settings are rock solid for me. These are my gaming settings! Try a more gentle overclock first? I've managed to push 27/27/26/26 with TDP of 110 TDC of 100 with no problems....except prime95 so this chip clearly has plenty of headroom. Do keep an eye on temperatures though. I have a cooling mod to keep my CPU nice and cool.

Beat that and I will buy your chip haha!MatsueMaiku and fatboyslimerr like this. -
While I was re-applying the thermal paste, the hole where the number 4 CPU screw screws in stripped out. That one was always a little wonky, but I had just assumed it was something weird with the spring. I'll keep a close eye on my temps, but I might be screwed. I found a thread on Notebook Forum where this has happened before. http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/alienware-m15x-cpu-socket-heatsink-screw-loose.761521/page-2 Emjay 87 resorted to wrapping the screw in aluminum foil and it apparently worked. If things run too hot, I'll give it a try.

I tried the aluminum foil trick three times. It didn't work. I didn't expect it would. I might try ordering some Loctite or something.

I tried 67 .5 A and 68.5 W 25X, 24X, 24X, 24X. My max frequency was 3.27 GHZ. The maximum temperature was 86 C. I got 323 marks on Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility benchmark, but only 238 in Cinebench. Without overclocking I get 272 marks in Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility benchmark, but 358 in Cinebench. I have no clue why Cinebench gets worse when I overclock.

Hello
Yes I started that thread a while back. However, I ended up purchasing a new motherboard for the M15x from Ebay. I replaced it last week without any difficulties. There is a video on youtube which shows how to tear down and fix back your M15x.
I thought it is worth replacing the motherboard. I love this machine to bits. This is the 1st expensive item i ever bought with my own money and I wish to keep it alive
incase you decide to replace the motherboard, just be careful next time with the screw holder and stuff. Screwdrivers matters alot, so please make sure to get a good make -
I was thinking about getting a new motherboard. I can find some good deals on Ebay, but the shipping to Japan is always really high if the seller will even do it. I'm considering putting in a super thin layer of JB Weld in the CPU standoff hole. JB Weld can take the heat and can be machined according to their website, so I'm thinking I can maybe put a super thin layer across the threads in there and let it set then when I tighten the CPU screw down it will self tap. It might be a stupid idea, but if I have to buy a new motherboard anyway, it might be worth the risk.
I finally upgraded
