Help on installing GTX860M on Alienware M15X

So I had read the guide to disable the soundcard but.. how do I install the driver for GTX860M? I heard you need modified .inf but how do I do it?

*Edit: I managed to install GTX860M driver by copy pasting a .inf file from laptop2go but now the card is running too hot even with thermal paste on.

 

I guess no one is able to help me with the thermal issues.

 

Try undervolting if possible, new thermal paste,cleaning the heatsink, a higher fan profile, etc. If none of those work, I don't know what to tell you

 

hey bro, im new , not to modding and hacking but new to this alienware 15 forum. for years i was on the alienware 18 forum and there are some really smart dudes there that basically saved my 5 thousand dollar waste of money to be able to run the way alienware intended it to. That being said can i ask you a question? over on the 18's there werent many differences in what you could swap in and out of your machine depending on the model.. i noticed i have a alienware 15 r4 when i started posting here. i have a 1070 and like i said i dont know what your machine will allow you to switch in and out for , but my alienware 18 had two nvidia 780m"s in SLI and my 1070 just crushed them in benching. i dont want to rain on your parade but the 860 is garbage. my two 780m's in sli 9 out of 10 times beat two 880m's in sli. and the 7 series and 8 series were just rebrands so they were all the same chips, but the 800 series had more vram but had severe thermal issues and would always throttle . like i said ask people with more knownledge about the 15. but i can tell you first hand the 800's were just rebranded 700's with more memory and extremely more heat. i know people who were able to to mod and run two 980's in SLI and the ones who couldn't run SLI got 980's to work.. . if you can get a 980, or even a 970. They arent bank breakers and youll see the difference in power immediately ..

 

The 860m is a Maxwell GPU, its a 750 Ti inside a laptop, its not the greatest gpu available, but its pretty decent even today, its a mid-range GPU, its on par with a 1030, of course, depends a lot on what OP wants to do with the laptop.

 

I am not so sure. I think the MXM based 860M's were Kepler based while only the soldered chips were Maxwell based. This puts the MXM based cards at a disadvantage even though they OC well in terms of performance. The same goes for the 870M which is essentially an overclocked 680M with faster & more vram but a narrower vram bus (192bit vs 256bit). I would go for the 870M if you want a Kepler based card or straight to a 970M for Maxwell.

Another fairly underrated mid range card is the 770M. This thing also overclocks well and can offer pretty good bang for buck these days.
