I recently had a nasty computer virus that forced me to have to start my computer back up from scratch. I lost a ton of things, and I learned a lesson about backing up my files more frequently. Something that has be driving me crazy, though, is that I can't get Catalyst Control Center's Overdrive to function again. I've been reading forums, uninstalling and reinstalling different drivers for 2 days. I've tried using Driversweeper and re-installing CCC and nothing has worked. I tried to install some older drivers from 2011 and 2012 as well as some newer ones like version 13.1, 13.4, and 13.5. Nothing has worked. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I would use something else like Trixx to overclock, but it has always given me nothing but problems and I really like CCC.
My m15x laptop has the i5 540m CPU
5850M GPU
Windows 7 64-bit OS
8 GB of Ram

You need overdrive? Why not just use ATT (ATI Tray Tools) works well with 6xxxM series cards so also the 5xxxM cards.

I already said that I really like overdrive. It has worked very well for me in the past, and I have tried other overclocking tools before. I just tried ATI Tray Tools and got a blue screen. After the blue screen, this popped up. I really don't want to screw around with a different overclocking tool. None of them has been as successful for me as CCC when I can access it. If anyone has any idea about how to get overdrive to work, I'd be happy to hear it.

It looks like I might have to go back to MSI Afterburner again for now. For some strange reason I get tons of tears across my screen if I unlock MSI's unofficial overclocking, but everything seems to work pretty well as long as I leave that alone. It seems strange that there would be problems with screen tears even though I never actually touched the voltage. I don't really need to up the voltage for my minor overclocks anyway. I'm still interested if anyone can figure out where I was going wrong with CCC.

Not sure what is wrong with the ccc, but i use sapphire trixx to OC my 5850m. Never any issues, and oc's/overvolts very easily.

Howdy. First, you have the updated VBIOS flashed to your GPU, yes? If yes, then did you use the default Dell 5850m drivers when you did your clean install? If not, open the Programs and Features control panel and uninstall Catalyst Control Center, AMD Catalyst Install Manger, and any other AMD software that shows up in the program list. Reboot. Then go to Device Manager, click on your 5850M GPU, right-click and select uninstall. When the confirmation box comes up, check the box that says to delete the driver files after uninstall. Then reboot. Repeat the device manager driver uninstall until your 5850m shows up as a "generic VGA adapter" in device manager. That tells you all the driver files for your GPU have been removed and you're starting with a clean slate. Now try downloading the default Dell 5850M drivers: Driver Details | Dell US and install those. See if overdrive shows up now. If it does, you should be able to update to the latest Catalyst package without losing the overdrive function, but don't quote me on that. You may only be able to update to 11.7, or whatever version you were using before you got hit by the virus.

Here is something that might work for you... it's how I used to do it.
Guide: How to Enable AMD Overdrive
I also found ATI Tray Tools were garbage. They never worked correctly for me on any ATI/AMD powered desktop or laptop, although some were worse that others. -
Thanks for all of the advice everyone! I can't really test anything out or give a good reply yet because I just had my first born a couple of days ago. When I get a little bit of time, I'll test out your ideas and give a proper response.

Thanks everyone. I first followed Mr. Fox's advice, but unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I next followed Radji's advice and uninstalled all of my AMD drivers then installed the Dell drivers first. Now I have my CCC with Overdrive back just like before! I was also able to install the latest AMD drivers without a hitch. I love this forum!
I should probably mention that instead of the drivers reading as "generic VGA adapter" they actually are called "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter." I'm sure most people could figure that out on their own, though. -
Excellent. Generic VGA Adapter. Standard VGA Graphics. It's all the same.
