Hi all, I installed this a few weeks ago
Originally it was running really hot after installing, as in over 70 at idle
So took the back off, reapplied thermal paste again and bingo, idles at 40
I am seeing according to hwmonitor that it maxes at 99 when playing football manager 20
Now, is hwmonitors max reading 99 so I am maybe going higher than that?
I read that this card runs hot so is 99 actually ok?
If not, what could be causing it
I downloaded speedfan but it doesnt even recognise any of my fans despite me knowing for a fact they do come on
Is this anything to do with either the fan itself even though it runs, might be broken?
Or is using the 150w power brick causing issues?
Thank you

This card is a furnace due to the high TDP relative to the small size of the die which makes it harder to cool in some situations, always make sure there is good contact otherwise one will be forced to shim the core which I have had to do which helps bring the temps down. On the side AMD did miss out on an opportunity to make a higher performing but still relatively cheap to produce card where all they had to do was use the full 896 shaders and clock the core higher which would have pegged it faster than the 7970m. Wished they made 4GB versions for obvious reasons.

You are going to cook your card if you leave it running at 99C. Need HWINFO to control fans, make sure you have proper contact with heatsink.

When I was dealing with M6100 on my M15x all was well, but considering your issues I'd suggest cleaning all the drivers with AMD sweeper and loading older drivers. something like Catalyst/Adrenaline 13/14. Also, what method of getting drivers are you using? If you don't mind no embedded performance support, just sweep it anyway and let Windows sort it out. They seem to have finally gotten around to handle basic driver support (better late than never I guess). Then you can restore brightness control manually with regedit and you should be fine.

Should modern drivers work with this card?
I had a hell of a time getting a driver, all the modern ones had errors installing and had to use an ancient one
Could that be the issue with over heating? -
Tried adrenalin 14 and got that error...

Yes, this one is typical. Had the same issue with my M17XR2. From what I've seen somewhere on the forum, reinstall should do. Try default Win10.

Sorry, reinstall what?
I know it says it works for the radeon 8900 series (which the m6100 for some reason installs as) but I thought the error was maybe due to it being an old card and too new a driver?
I am on win7... -
Reinstall drivers. Sorry, should've been a little bit clearer. Also try juggling the driver version, until one sticks. Or use the AMD self-detection utility for it to find the correct driver.
The thing is, that error was only annoying with a pop-up at Windows start-up, all other aspects of gaming was ok. Also, for me at least, it was impossible to run EVGA at all, both on Firepro and 7970M. -
Do you mind pointing me towards the latest driver that should work for me?
Is my problem that I need to use an dedicated driver removal program first, DDU? -
Can be. Any residual files left by the previous driver can cause issues.
We'll, yes and no - Catalyst (and Adrenaline) is a sort of a hybrid between a driver and hardware control center, same like GeForce Experience, it installs the drivers AND supply you with support app - with default Windows drivers you loose the ability to do stuff like Catalyst image adjustment, in case of M17XR2 ability to switch between Crossfire and single GPU, and so on. But it's pretty well optimized (the Windows 10 driver that is) for standard use. -
So if I have win7 and just want the latest driver , which one should I be looking for? -
Hi were you able to solve your temp problems already?
I just recently sold my firepro m6100 but I wanted to share how I was able to lower its temps, I was first getting high temps due to the fact that our stock heatsink isn't making enough contact with the GPU die.
What I did was do the copper shim method, so I placed a 1.0mm thick 15 x 15mm copper shim between the die and heatsink. I did a benchmark of ffxV and my idle was in the 40's to 50's degree celcius but as soon as I ran the benchmark, It would go up to the mid 90's which was scary for me. So what I did was change the size of my copper shim to 1.2mm thick and I think I hit the sweet spot, my max temp was 80 degree.
This is just my personal experience though so you can try this and experiment with different copper shim thickness.
