So I just recently got my M15x and it's been going great. However, I decided to try to improve performance on games like Crysis by updating my drivers.

When I uninstalled the old drivers, the working area of the screen shrunk to about half of the screen size, surrounded by black. As I've always just installed drivers over the old ones, I figured this was normal and ran CCleaner. I then installed the new drivers (10.8).

Upon reboot, the screen is at full size again, but everything is VERY pixelated and slow. I'm assuming I can do a system restore to get things back to the way they were when things were working smoothly enough, but what went wrong and what can I do to fix this?

sounds like the driver didn't install correctly. what screen res do you have?

try unistalling again, reboot then run ccleaners then install again.

not sure if 10.8 needs the install work around, i haven't had the chance to try it yet.

I'll try that. And I did the workaround described in the New Owner's Info topic (changing false to true) before I installed.

Oh, and the res is 800x600, for some reason. Changing it (max 864, for some reason) just makes the work area smaller.

yeah thats the workaround, i'm using the dell driver. its much easier to install and seems to be very stable. but i heard good things about the 10.8 though.

I'd hate to sound like a broken record, but I may as well post this again.

Download the new drivers first. After that...

    1) Download Driver Sweeper here. Install it.

    2) Go into the "Uninstall Programs" area of the control panel. Uninstall the NVIDIA drivers.

    3) Reboot into safe mode. Run driver sweeper and delete all traces of the NVIDIA drivers. Reboot into normal windows.

    4) Install the new drivers. Then just reboot one more time and you're all good ;)

Nope, didn't help, still having the same problem. This thing looks worse than my old 6-year old computer, and is running about as fast.

I want to avoid a system restore if I can since I'd lose some data. What else can I do to fix this?

And thanks, I'll try that next, you posted while I was typing. :p

Yeah, that didn't help either. I'm still stuck at a terrible resolution and speed no matter what I do. =/

Did you make sure you download the mobility driver?
Also how big was the file you downloaded from ati, make sure its the small one, the 1.1 mb or something similar to that. Then run the exe and it will download the driver for you.

Okay, I think I'm just going to do a system restore and hope it fixes my problem. It's from a couple days ago so I'll lose game data and maybe a school paper, but I'm starting to get error messages and it's telling me that Word isn't installed. I'm just going to try to get things back to how they were and then never try to update drivers again. >_>
