I was reading this thread a bit and most fixes are after replacements of mother board.... So Do you think its mother board problem or something connected with it?
-
I have only had my Alienware 15x for 1 week, and today I was playing an audio sample and the crackling has come from nowhere, I have never had the volume past the 2nd bar and usually have it turned right down. Is this something I will have to get fixed, will it get worse? It seems to come and go at the minute but when it starts crackling it is impossible to listen too.

Haven't been to this thread for a while now, but thought I'd share what I'd found in relation to audio quality.
I wrote a small guide before on how to improve quality ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m15x/495187-fix-audio-quality-crackling-music-only.html), but I hadn't found a solution for WinAmp, and I'm glad to say that I have found one (though IDT must go for it to work).
There are a few minor issues with this however, in that:
1. Windows Media Player can be temperamental with video and audio codecs after doing these steps.
2. Your M15x will never recognise a speaker system (connected by TRS 3.5mm), it will assume that naything plugged into the 'headphone' sockets are indeed headphones.
3. If you are experiencing audio crackling, it will not go away with this fix.
Anyway.
1. You must uninstall the IDT audio drivers by going to:
Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> IDT audio [or something similar to this] -> Uninstall.
2. You must restart your computer. It may not have any sound until Windows loads up, do not be alarmed.
3. Windows will now have installed it's default audio driver. Now you will need to download the WASAPI output plugin for WinAmp (found here: http://maiko.elementfx.com/out_maiko.zip).
4. Extract the file 'out_maiko.dll' to the plugin folder of WinAmp. For me, it is found here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp\Plugins
5. Open up Winamp, and navigate to the output options, like so:
Just click on it so that it is selected like in the image above and click close.
6. Listen to audio naturally.
This will also improve the quality of every single piece of audio on your system e.g. Games, movies etc.
If you have the audio crackling problem, you will need to get your Audio board replaced. It is unfortunately buried deep in your system, so it may take some time to replace yourself. Or, as most people's M15x's are in warranty, you could always just speak to Dell and order a replacement audio board and techie to come down and replace it for you.
I had the audio crackling problem, so ordered another audio board from Dell and a Dell techie. He came and replaced the audio board (among other things), and the problem has since vanished. I would assume the problem comes from interruption somewhere in the case (like the back on the ports touching another metal component etc). But I'm not sure.
Hope this helps! -
This is what I did to fix it. Seems I overwrote the dell bluetooth drivers with the microsoft one during an update. I downloaded the appropriate dell bt driver - installed it and mine has been crackle free for almost 2 mths. -

Ok.. when I play youtube videos, through native speakers I get a sound sometimes, usually close the beginning that sounds like an old school record and the needle is quickly drug across it. Then it goes away. Only does it at the beginning. So.. my question is...
a. Is this idt driver related? IF I un-install it and use windows will the regular speakers still work?
b. Is this video related? Meaning i need to kick up the lower clock speeds of my video card to a more performance level?
c. Other
Thanks! I know about the winamp stuff but i have no desire to do that. I game a lot and I normally don't hear that type of squeal from gaming.

Actually can you order it without Bluetooth? Because I did if you can  -
Anyone find a solution to this yet? It really bothers me and I just ended my 1 year warranty with alien ware so I probably cant contact them for help right...
-
Hmm, weird... never really realized this before but I get this crackling when my headphone are connected and AlienFX is off or when I have two headsets connected... On the internal speakers I can't hear a crackling. I guess I call Dell tomorrow.

I just got my m15x yesterday and when I went to play some wow I realized the audio had a static sound through my headphones, so I disabled the sound in game and in fact it has alot of static going on in the background. So i exited the game and went online to try to figure it out and noticed that after a little while the static was gone. So i opened WoW again and as soon as the video card started to rev up i got the same static. So what I did was i went into my WoW video setting and started messing with sliders, It seemed like the harder I made the video card work by putting up spell effects the louder the static got.
I am not that experienced with how laptops are built but could the video card be the culprit? It seems like it has to be with what I was experiencing. -
I haven't heard people complaining about the M17x-R3, although obviously having had to return an M15x, I'm super hesitant about trying an M17x-R3. -
This is a motherboard issue. I bought my system 2 weeks ago, had the issue, a tech came out and put a new mb in and now its gone. if you have in home service, push to have them come to you (thats what you paid for right) otherwise they will try to tell you that you have to send it to the depot for them to try and "replicate" the issue. if you get a rep who wont set up the service call, just hang up and call back and talk to another rep.
-
I'm not sure it's a motherboard issue, just because I only had the audio board replaced and it now works perfectly. Therefore, anyone who has audio crackling will need to get their audio board replaced.
-
hmm, well the motherboard replacement worked for me so who knows.
-
I solved my crackling by installing the latest Bluetooth driver.....not a single cracking sound since (over two weeks now)
Crazy eh? :/
I have been having problems on and off for the past year or so and dell were useless...hopefully i won't have the problem again......fingers crossed! -
In my case I didn't even have a bluetooth driver on there. Besides, it shouldn't be connected :-/
-
Sorry... But how do I check if I have the crackling?
How can I reproduce the crackling on my M15x?
Thanks! -
basically plug headphones in, turn the volume all the way up on the program and over 50% on the computer and listen to multiple tracks. I have 1 track that i can send you that works PERFECTLY to hear the crackling. its an insturmental hip hop beat that makes it very noticable. let me know if you would like a link to it. if not, just try multiple songs and if its there, you will hear it. i just like the insturmental because the voices on most songs seems to cover it up a little bit
-
actually just decided to put the link up anyway. Here you go, just click play and crank the volume and if its there, you will notice it badly. it almost sounds like your headphones are shorting out.

Here is my setup:
Philips SHE2650: SHE2650/00 Philips In-Ear Headphones SHE2650 - Philips Support
Or iPod earbuds: Apple earbuds - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And my sound volume:
My IDT settings:
I can't hear the crackling. Could it be that I don't have that? Or my ears are wrong
What I'm doing wrong?
Thanks! -
most likely if your not hearing it, you dont have it. on mine, it got so bad at about 80% on the computer that you couldnt hardly hear the song. i tried it on 3 different sets of headphones including my blackberry headset, a set of sony earbuds and a set of skullcandy over ears and it was there in all 3. it was louder in the in ears but you could still hear it on the skull candys. i would try a few more tracks if you want but it seems like yours doesnt have this issue.
-
Thanks!
And is there any response from Dell? -
all i did was call dell and explained the issue. after fighting with one rep, i got another who sent me a new motherboard and had a tech come and put it in. I do have the inhome service warranty though so....
Basically, you can browse that site and since they are all insturmentals, you should hear it on all of them. -
Anyone figure out a new way to solve this? I need to do a sound recording for my company and I cant have my computer sending crackling noises over the recording... Im also out of warranty (over 1 year) so I doubt dell will be of any help right?
-
Peronally my solution inside the 21 day window was to get rid of it. Inside warranty I guess I'd keep dealing with Dell, hoping they actually fixed it? Baring that, I"d try a USB Soundblaster or the like...hopefully it'll be clean through USB, and hopefully USB works okay for games and other things that require good performance.
-
lol so alienware wants to charge me $337 for an extended warranty since mine expired last month and I never contacted them about the problem. That price seems pretty steep 2 me... I know it was my fault for waiting so long but I mean this seems to be a common problem. Alienware should just fess up to the mistake already.
337$? Forget it -
Hi, has anyone found the cause of this problem yet?
I have had my m15x for a year and this problem started for me as of yesterday and it is unbearable. How are people coping with this? I tried the foobar fix to no avail. I want to smash things. -
Do you use a morphing AlienFX theme? This caused some audio crackling in my system.
-
Mine crackled regardless of the lights, which I shut off because I found them annoying.
-
So the people that doesn't have this issue... it just could appears!?
HELP MAMAAA! -
Got mine couple of months ago. Hooked up, to mixx a couple of songs. Noticed how one of the channels sounded "blown". And one perfect with bass and everything. Looks like i have to call dell
-
Bringin some more news to an old post.
Called AW premium support. Did diagnostics, sound still bad.
Changing to a new motherboard this wednsday. (as he told the tech would call for directions) -
If you experience any sound problems at all like audio crackling, distortion, anything.. Simply remove "IDT Audio" in Control Panel > Program And Features, Reboot.. then reinstall the driver from Alienware's driver support site, Reboot again.
Problem solved. -

Yeah, I think I could get the amount of problem to vary depending on drivers, but couldn't get it to an acceptable level.
My Asus I just use normal Windows drivers, and only hear any hiss if it's cranked way up-at 50% or even above there's no audible problem.
I'm sorry, I have a huge problem with this problem...I mean my iPod nano has clean audio, so I don't understand why a $400 PC, let alone a $2000 one should have hissing -
This is already a known problem with the m15x.
It took me 3 months calling dell UK and US(email) to get this fixed.
BIOS and Sound drivers have little to no help in fixing this problem, although removing IDT does help a little. I tried using different types of driver from m15x to m17x with no improvement(check previous post). Nor formatting does any help at all.
Solution:
1. Get an external sound card.
Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! | Creative Labs Online Store
2. Call dell and insist that you get your mobo changed, if this doesnt fix it, get them to change it again. Had mine changed twice to fix the problem.
Hope this helps. -
Don't know if it's been brought up yet, but updating the audio driver to the M17x audio driver and updating the BIOS to A09 fixed it for me.
I only experienced crackling sounds during certain games though. Nothing else.
By the way, hello all. I have decided I have stalked these forums long enough. Made an account finally. -
