Recently ordered a M15X with an i7 740QM. read in few threads that ATI HD5730 is not that great of a graphic card for playing!
just wondering what all games can i play and at what resolutions if anyone has the same card?
Alienware is my dream laptop for the past long long years and i am a little worried if i have got the right configuration!

You can play crysis warhead with your native screen ress with everything on low and get about 50fps according to notebookcheck's chart
-
Don't worry, the M15x is a fantastic system... and something that's really great is also the great upgradabilty... so in case you need more power, call Dell and let them put in a 5850 or 460m... or do it yourself. You can find those cards on the marketplace in this forum, or on some internet sites. It's pretty easy to upgrade.

I have a 5730 and I can play crysis 2 lowest settings and get about 35-40fps and bullestorm is about the same on medium settings and i can play dead space 2 fine on max settings. This is all with the GPU overclocked though, I've never tried playing without it overclocked.

The 5730 is not bad but it is a lower-mid card. Some games are really intense on the system whilst others aren't. You can get away with Dead Space and BioShock nicely. Unreal Engine games like Splinter Cell and BulletStorm may also be playable at 1080p after tweaking the settings. Don't even go near Metro 2033 as it brings the best super computers to the ground. If I were you, I'd tell myself that I did myself a favour by going with a nice cheap option from Dell and go get myself an aftermarket upgrade and save a few bucks. A 5850 or a 460m will do nicely. If you are feeling adventurous, go for the 6970 but it is a big risk in terms of full compatibility. -

probably i will use it for sometime and upgrade it later if its really necessary for my needs
btw was chatting with a dell rep..

Check out the "Computer Components" section.
If you get the card from Dell it will cost you about $300 afaik (that's when you live in the U.S. ... it may vary from region to region) That's the best way to get a card, as you have an official Dell warranty on it and it will be exchanged by a Dell service technician. Just call them and say you want an upgrade.
Otherwise, when you get the card from a different place, exchanging the it yourself is pretty easy.
The best you can get which is officially supported is a ATI Mobility 5850, the Nvidia 460m is also a decent card. Other options are the 5870m... and the 6970m (inofficially, and it hasn't been tested for a long time so far, but it works).

Edit: Haha, I'm slow... widezu69 summarized it perfectly. Well, call a different rep, maybe someone in the forum has a number of a more competent rep... -
@razor, ignore the fool he doesn't know jack. Plenty people here have done it here without fail, I'm one of them and I, as well as everyone here, can vouch for replacing the GPU.

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
The 5850m is about $285 from Dell, when available. You really, really need a 5850m (or an nVidia GTX 460m for slightly more money and with slightly less performance) to be able to enjoy the benefits of your other components. The 5730 severely restricts the performance available from the M15x, no offense intended to those with 5730's.

I've been saying it forever. Dell actually employ baboons to sell and repair their systems. I bet they sit around the sales office all day long throwing their crap at each other and confusing customers with their sheer bloody ignorance.
Don't listen to that ri diculous fool. He probably couldn't tell the difference between a monitor and a god darn komodo dragon. It's completely upgradeable.
You pretty much just take the old one out and pop the new one in (with a few other minor jobs before and after). The guys here are a phenomenal wealth of information and I daresay they could even walk one of those Dell baboons through the process without a hitch. You'll find all the answers and support you need right here when it comes to upgrading, customizing and troubleshooting. -
Dell needs to offer better video cards...dont call it AW and have these cards everyone says aren't top notch. Have options for better ones...terrible.
-
-
no options in the customization when getting a new m15x!!
also saw 5850 m15x at dell factory outlet! should have done my homework before a new purchase, but what the hell will upgrade later when available! -
-
Oh another point, just in case Dell appointed idiots say something, upgrading your video card yourself does not void any warranty you have on it.
-
-
That's not true... actually when Dell finds out you changed the GPU yourself they can void the warranty for the whole system. But usually the technicians don't care about what's in your system and if you're worried you can still put back the old parts before getting something repaired, so this shouldn't be an issues.
But you're right, if you get the card from a different vendor than Dell, the card is may be covered by the other vendor, but definitely not by Dell. -
420m vs 5730 which one is better?
I currently have my friends XPS 15 with a 420 and i am playing few games in it.. satisfied with 420m so far (nfs shift2)
is 5730 same or a little better? -
Is that a GTX 420M? Because I would've thought the GTX would be much better. If it's a GT though... Pfffffft. Sorry I don't have the motivation to research this myself, although I'm guessing there probably IS a GTX and GT 420M.
-
Nah the 5730 is quicker than the 420m. However, the XPS has a smaller resolution (unless he has the 1080p version) however the 5730 is still much quicker. It can actually manage Dead Space 2 on highest, bet the 420m can't.
-
So its a GT card then?
