Im posting this mainly as a warning for others, but also im looking for help
Upon installing the card, it seems like it would work, however, there are some MAJOR bugs I ran into
1. The GPU fan runs constantly at full power no matter what
2. On startup, the laptop beeps loudly, saying IRQ's for the PCI are not configured right or something like that
3. Installing the drivers on a windows 8.1 laptop, even with a modified .inf, does not work. It will fail to install after about getting halfway through the install process, even with driver signing disabled. I tried installing the drivers through windows device manager and disabled driver signing, and I thought that would work. it sort of did, however, every time I restart the computer, the drivers revert to the generic microsoft ones, and I then have to go through the hell of installing the drivers AGAIN, every time I restart
These 3 bugs tell me that this card simply is not compatible. If anyone else has gotten a 765m to work in their M15x let me know, but if not im just gonna return this and get a 660m

Which 765m card did you buy?
The IRQ conflict is usually down to the on board sound on the laptop conflicting with the sound part of the video card. Disable the on board sound of the laptop in the BIOS on the laptop. This will allow you to boot up your laptop.
On a Ithingy so can't link a fix to it, but if you google inboard sound issue 770m and you should find the answer either on here or Tech Inferno (same issue that I had with my Nvidia 770m).
Not to sure about the fans being on full blast, but get past the IRQ error message and see if it still happens.. -

To get around the fan issue install HWinfo64 and set it to boot with windows. You can switch the fans off with that program very easily and control their speed manually too. I recommend trying first to revert the fan to "system controlled" that might flip the fans back to normal speeds by themselves.
If you try this plus the advice given by djboz you should be good to go.
I wouldn't downgrade to 660M. It is a pretty worthless card these days.
Well if you hang tight I can sell you my 7970M soon. I hope to upgrade to M295X when it releases next month if the price is reasonable. 7970M works plug and play no issues whatsoever and very cool.
I run mine at an undervolt (0.975V instead of 1.05V) and consequently do not get above 70C during summer or 65C in winter when doing heavy gaming. This at stock clocks. The card is twice as powerful as the 765M. Yes these games push card hard (crysis 3, far cry 3 etc) -
I had the same issue with my M15x when I popped in my 8970M and the fans running full blast. Just use HWInfo and set it to auto fan control and set the fan respin time accordingly. The 8970M is basically an M290X and is FAAST. The 7970M is no slouch either though, would run most games on ultra or high settings.
As for the driver situation, try going into the windows startup options (F8 before boot) and select Disable driver signature enforcement and see if it will let you finish installing the driver. -
I assume you know exactly how to perform .inf mod, disable driver signing in windows 8.
The last thing that I could possibility think that issue you facing is due to the IDT HD audio is enabled in bios.
I remember I read somewhere before, you need to disable the IDT Audio in bios to get GTX 765M working in M15x -

if I remember correctly, IDT Audio is the onboard audio, the Nvidia card itself also has audio, so if you disable the onboard audio it will simple use the audio from the NVidia card.
as if you connected a usb headset, you can choose which audio device to use as the primary deviceKing of Interns likes this. -

You can also look into getting a cheap bluetooth speaker and / or usb speaker if you don't want to use a headset.
