Hey guys, I saw an Alienware m15x for 250$ ,
but when the power button is pressed the laptop turns on and goes off after 2 second : this is what the seller told me. it has an hd 6970m and killer 1103 wifi and i7 (not sure about processor) , what would be wrong with this laptop?
will vga , processor and some other parts be in working condition?
    it comes without harddisks.

Have no way of knowing based on that. There is diagnostic codes that are displayed on the caps, num and scroll lock if the system can't get to post and that would enable you to find out what part is malfunctioning. The fact that it's got a 6970 and he's only selling it for 250 would lead me to believe the seller knows that it's duff otherwise he'd strip it down and sell the parts.

Can you give me a link?
If it includes HD 6970M and Bigfoot killer, that price is quite good.

what he said is , soon after he press power button the lights comes and goes off after 2 seconds, cant it be the processor?
he is offering bigfoot killer 1103 for 25$ is that cheap?

Could be the processor, but equally could be gfx card, bad bios flash, dead motherboard or any number of things! But for 250 any part can be replaced in the m15x. As long as the chassis and screen are good I'd go for it. If you do break it down in the end I would be interested in the chassis, getting board of the red now!

Pretty sure it is the motherboard that is broken.

Not with this machine but I remember when the motherboard on my Asus C90P gave out switching it on simply resulted in it turning itself off after a few secs. No screen or other activity.

The processor is the least likely to die. Intel chips are incredibly hardy. If the GPU has failed it wouldn't result in the machine simply shutting off. The machine would probably run just no display.

Your best bet is to find a replacement board. Can be had for around $200 I think. If you paid peanuts for the thing in the first place then even with a motherboard replacement you are getting a great deal. If the processor is the i7 920 then the deal is even sweeter.

I'm going to guess that the 6970 is the cause of this problem. Either because of power draw limits, the mobo or the card itself may be bad. Having 2 6970s in my M17Xr2 (which is not supported) I'm familiar with these types of issues. I would assume the M15X has an AC adapter that is rated for 150watts?

Sounds like you are drawing too much power and your AC adapter is tripping. Does the adapter still have the blue power ring on it when the computer turns off or does it have to be unplugged and plugged in to get power back? As the 6970 in an M15X is unsupported (but may work), I'd have to say that this is the cause of your problems.

    Try looking at this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...nyone-thinking-trying-when-they-come-out.html
    or
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...u-need-know-upgrading-problems-solutions.html

This might provide some insight into this issue. If someone else has already mentioned all this, then sorry for rehashing.

If all else fails, try buying a HD5850 and seeing if it will boot with that card. It is the stock card for the M15X.

thanks for this wonderful info, did you get this type of an issue with R2 with 6970m's in crossfire? so what mesures did you take to solve it,
he used an 240W psu with m15x.
he told what happend is, he was on facebook and suddenly laptop shutdown and would not boot again.

Not exactly. But I had many crashes and went through 3 sets of cards before I got it right. Considering the seller has a 240W PSU, the problem is not going to be insufficient power, but could be too much. Not sure how he got a 240W PSU to work considering you can't use a 330W PSU on a M17Xr2. But maybe this problem was fixed with a BIOS mod.
I would definitely check this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...u-need-know-upgrading-problems-solutions.html
and post there to see if someone there could help.

My experience (and many others) with upgrading to 6970s (I now have 6990s) is that these cards are very flaky and they have a high rate of failure. Especially when going into systems that don't officially support them. If at all possible, I would make sure the card is not the problem. Either try another card or put that card into another system.
