What happened to the 5850 bios flashing guide?? I could use it!
-
1. Download the HP USB Key Utility: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 Download - EXTREME Overclocking
2. Download the Windows 98 system files: Windows 98 System Files Download - EXTREME Overclocking
3. Download Atiflash from techPowerUp! :: Download ATIFlash 3.79
4. Install the HP USB Key Utility
5. Launch the HP USB Key Utility and do the following:
- Insert your USB thumb drive.
- Select File system as "FAT32"
- Select Format Option as "Create a DOS bootable Disk..."
- Checkmark the box that says, "Quick Format"
- Locate the directory you extracted the Win98 files.
- Format the USB key using the the Win98 files.
6. make copy of your bios using gpu-z
4. use rbe to edit your vbios, then save to your usb stick, remember to add ".rom" at the end of your new bios name when saving. Also remember to save atiflash on the usb stick also.
7. Restart.
8. F12
9. Boot from USB
10. At command prompt... type in "atiflash -s 0 vbios.rom - this is to save the original bios
11. then type in "atiflash -p -fs 0 "newbios".rom - this will flash the new bios
FLASHING IS RISKY, so do so at your own risk. -
Thanks inap. I wish there was a way to recover a bad flash but it seems to not post at all, even if I were to program something to boot off of USB and autorun the flash command.
-
Yep, same thing when trying to save in RBE. I get an error, something to do with the subvendor id and it won't save. This is probably why the last flash borked.
-
yeah your best move is to call dell for a new mobo. good luck
-
hmm my bad i could of linked the wrong rbe version. hold on let me see if i can find the right version.
edit: sorry I couldn't remember which was the working version, try 1.26 or older and see if that works.

Ahhhh, I was using the wrong RBE version. No wonder. Yeah, I already got a replacement video card. Trying to flash my stable over clocks so I don't have to keep using atitool but almost afraid to now after the first disaster

@Inap, now that's the boiled down, condensed version of the process. LOL.
-
It sure is. Still have the original problem though.
My 5850 stops at 300/400. powerplay enabled, tried it disabled and it does nothing. Basically, I have yet to see this thing go to 625/1000 under load. I used ATITool to artifact scan and GPUZ tells me the gpu load is 85%+.
Clocks still 300/400, I verified what GPUZ is telling me to what DXDIAG says and they both show correctly so I am left wondering if it is a problem with the 11.2 software. About to revert back to the Dell drivers tonight but kind of at a loss here.... -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
The stock 5850M caps out at 300/400 under 2 conditions -- 1) Stealth mode is enabled or 2) PowerPlay is disabled. It has nothing to do with the Cat 11.2 drivers.

hahah the guide is just a copy and paste of the stuff of the rev and the wiz, put together for me so i can't really take credit for it.
without them i would still be a noob.heheh
the rev is also right, sounds like stealth mode. -
Rev, you are the man. It was stealth mode. I didn't evne think of that because my games still ran fine. Strange stuff.

Glad it helped. Try Wattos' Stealth Mode Indicator ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...h-mode-indicator-stealthmodeindicatorbin.zip). Install it, create a shortcut and drag it into the Startup folder and stealth mode issues will be 99% eliminated.

Inap, you're the nicest guy in the world - and a shameless promoter of other people. I wonder what this forum will look like when you get the R3 (or whatever comes next). It sure won't be the same -- or near as good -- if its heart and soul moves on.
-
haha thanks for the kind words, rev. i always thought that you would move on to a newer machine before i did. most likely be getting an r3, once it releases again. but i will always be around telling peeps to do the power drain, hahahah
-
1 last question for you two. At stock speeds, 625/1000 my vid card hits 82-85c. Is this alarming??? I thought that was kind of hot but it runs great, no artifacts or anything.
-
Perhaps a repaste will help your temps.
-
is that the core or vram temp? those are my max temps when i'm oc'ed at 750/1050. you are ok if running stock, but if your planning on ocing then you'll need to repaste the thermal compound along with some thermal pads.
-
That was core....
Okay, well then I must have done smoething wrong because this was a replacement card that I put in on Monday. I cleaned off the heatsink and applied some AS5 so maybe I did it wrong? I don't see how I could mess that up but anything is possible. -
from what i've seen as5 is not as good as mx-4 or ocz freeze for the gpu die.
-
I too have a bug after flashing my card to 700/1000/1.05, the card wont go above 300/400/.9, and i have the stealth mode indicator, and thru cpu montioring i can tell that stealth mode is not active, but the video cards fine if i toggle if on and off.... this happen to anyone else??? Or any advice, it just bugs me

PowerPlay enabled?
-
so turning stealth mode on and off fixes it?
-
Yup power plan enabled, and switching SM on then off fixes it....
-
not really sure what can be causing this. maybe try reinstalling the osd, along with a power drain.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Is the Stealth Mode Indicator utility running at Startup and is the Auto Fix option checked? Seems clearly a malfunction related to Stealth Mode which the SMI is designed to avoid. And usually does.
-
Didn't think of reinstalling the osd.... i have to try that, i did a power drain...(anytime i have an issues thats the first thing i do..lol).
And yes i have SMI running at start up and on A. Fix -
alright so i uninstalled and reinstalled OSD and still same issue
the only thing that helped (aside from toggling SM on/off) was setting the ati battery level to max performance, which is weird cuz i always run my lappy on plug.... any ideas on a possible fix...
lappy used to be fine before i flash the vbios, wonder if i should try flash normal A02, and then back to overclocked vbios....
i dont know if it has some thing to do with it but i alway keep my battery charging disabled and just running on plug
