anyone else got this problem? booting up, the two usb ports on the right side doesn't work. I had to reboot to fix this.

I disabled alienfusion, after reading posts here. I've checked under window's power option, set usb power setting, usb selective suspend setting to disable.

are there any other things i've missed?

I have R2, no overclock. stock usb driver

    thanks

Is USB Legacy Support enabled in the BIOS?

where can I find that option?
i've looked into the bios, cant find it.

    ===edit 1
I just called aw support, rep told me to open up my laptop , take the battery out, press and hold power button for 1 min, then put everything back together, power up my laptop again see if the port works.

well, I unplugged the laptop, didn't take the battery out, powered it up on battery. then the ports on the right side both worked just fine.
I'm still convinced that there are something under power management or softwares are messing up...somewhere.

Second page of the BIOS settings -> USB Emulation. With a confusing description that says legacy support...

I've had the USB legacy support on for ages with no USB problems and I've now got it disabled.. with no problems.

USB may 'hang' on a hibernate or something as I've had that happen with my four(4) port USB hub with wireless mouse and three USB sticks. Yes I know.

One can rescan USB devices within the Device Manager.
I've seen USB devices with yellow *exclamation* marks next to them and a reboot solved the problem when a rescan didn't. Shouldn't happen more than once or twice in a blue moon.

One can also disable and enable a USB device as a crude reset. .. if it's showing.

Also the USB device(s) should have operational drivers.

P.S. The only powered USB is on the left hand side next to the Ethernet port.
Those of the right hand side are not powered.

only the two on the right side might / sometimes will not work when booting up. (mouse / kb connected to them aren't working)

under system device manager, usb hub/roots are all in working order, no " ! ", under bios, settings are all stock ( been very busy prior heading over seas..sigh, so I don't have much time tweaking it), and just double checked, usb emulation set to ON.

the powered usb on the left is always working, even the ones on the right decided to 'take a break' from time to time.

    ===
just rebooted twice, usb ports are all working, maybe my little unplug /battery power boot worked.. :D
thank you all for helping a computer noob out. i will post more related problems if... (knocks on wood)

I believe you are mistaken, the "powered" USB port is for trickle charging devices while the laptop is off and plugged into an AC adapter unless you specify in the BIOS other wise. I have powered both my external DVD drive and external HDD from both of the ports on the right side of an R2 unit (lol not the droid but that would be cool)

heh...this is just getting better and better
I rebooted the laptop, with AC plugged in, right side usb ports doesn't work. so I called tech support, the rep, used alien contact. uninstall-ed my free fall sensor.
go on and installed the driver from dell support page.
well...after reboot, usb ports still not working. then the rep gave up, said he will replace the 'usb card'
so... along with new hinge that I ordered, new 'usb card' or something will come as well.
    sigh

huh. The two on my right started having some issues with not working, too...

Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Nothing in thge dev manager to indicate and issue. The one on the left always works.

Thank you for clarifying the Universal Serial Bus (USB) where my wording was ambiguous.

    USB 1.0 and 2.0 supplies 5 V at up to 0.5 A (2.5 W).
    USB 3.0 supplies 5 V at up to 0.9 A (4.5 W)

USB with USB PowerShare allows you to charge a USB device when the computer is powered off or in a sleep state.

As stated, the USB with USB PowerShare is located on the left hand side of the M11x.

Some USB devices need to draw more than 500 mA and can not be powered by a single USB. Using a 'Y' cable, two USB ports can be used to draw power simultaneously and thus provide the downstream USB device requirements.

In strict terms a powered USB port is another beast altogether and consists of a complex USB port connector which includes a standard USB port and a powered USB connection stacked on top of each other. This provides higher voltage and watts. Used for connecting small peripherals with greater power requirements.

I think where I went wrong was that I have USB hubs that provide 1000mA and not just 500mA. These ports are noted with a lightening strike symbol which made me think the USB port on the left hand side of the M11x had a higher power output.

I find no information to support this and believe the lightening strike symbol on the M11x USB port just means PowerShare and nothing more. Be nice if it did support 1000mA though.

Just so as we know what we're looking at the following shows the right hand side I/O board.

now I wonder... did I forget to plug in that cable the last time I dissembled my laptop...? I always seem to forget something during each dissassembly.

    3.5mm Audio working?

It's on the same board and the only cables you could have missed.

The IO board is just 'pressed' into the motherboard connector.

And if screwed down should have a good connection.

Probably just something like poor power distribution to the board at power up.
    Whatever that means.

Multi-meter on the USB ports I say.

In the past I've had to insert and re-insert USB devices in these ports before they kick in.

    getting worse.
booting up on ac, ports weren't working. reboot, might work, might not
booting up on battery power, everythings fine.

been playing around alien fusion / power management all morning.
