The second one, the R1, looks like a rip off. It has the same or lesser specs for more. Of those two, I'd go with the first one, the R2.

Yeah go with the i5 processor, I'm sure you know that there are other laptops out there other then alienware.

BUT, if your dead set on alienware - between them two that you posted then yes the i5 would be a much better choice.

google any coupon codes, if you know anyone in the military or maybe you buy it through aafes.

unfortunatly they only have the m11x r1 for sale only but check this out for a new system

You could find a lot of deals on m11x r1 for a couple of months now. I am not sure if any are longer available.

Newegg used to have it for 650 dollars for the same spec he listed (edit: newegg had 320gb HDD and no bluetooth), except for those who live in the 3 states where Newegg charges tax. I live in NY and they wouldn't charge tax, for example, and I would have gotten it for 650 bucks.

It is currently there for 750 bucks and it goes out of stock very quickly. I got mine for 700 bucks for bargaining with Newegg (I don't know how it was even possible). I missed the 650 dollars sale by like an hour. 50 dollars wouldn't hurt. Awesome machine.

    If you saw

    Alienware M11x R2 for 799$

Processor: Intel Core i5-520UM (3M Cache, 1.866 GHz Max Turbo Frequency)
    Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
    Alienware M11x R2 Laptop
320 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
8 GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
    1 GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 335 M

Definintely go for it, over the r1. You said you do some video editing. r1 CPU isn't very good for that. Also, the price is much better for what you get. ~100 bucks for much better CPU and RAM.

If you are OK with refurbished, check out

    http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnline...Search.aspx?rn=1107&SC=&c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

750 dollars for that is pretty good deal.

As for me, I can never trust refurbished ever in my life and I do not like to use things that others have used previously. So I don't go with refurbished.

700 bucks for what I got is sufficient especially since I already have a good gaming machine and m11x will be more for carrying around. More than sufficient.

(Didn't you say your father would not pay more than 700 bucks?)

For R1: replace 8Gb upgrade from Dell (180$ value) with 8Gb upgrade from Newegg ( ~80$). Now R1 is not a rip off. This is new machine, as I understand R2 is a refurbished one.

840$ is quite high for an i7-1st gen. Did you not use the -20% coupon?

Save 20% on all Dell Outlet Laptops & Desktops

    N06H0?R17M35SB

If you didn't, I'd call and mention the coupon and if they don't agree to add it, cancel and re-order using the coupon.

The reason I say it's high is because the R3 starts at just 159$ more with all the new bells and whistles.

i used it, the originally price was almost a thousand with the coupon it became 840 plus tax, now there is only one i7s there now that is over 1100$ but there was alot of r1 but overpriced like 900$ - 800$, i just close my eye and bought the i7 since my mom added money, did i make a mistake?

Well, for 159$ more you could of had newer tech that will be much more future proof. I'd say if you can afford/spare 159$ (plus tax of course), then cancel and get an R3. The R3 gets things like:

    - Up to 10 hours of battery life (R2's have 6.5hrs, right?)
*A review even has it at 12.5hrs without wifi but I'm not sure how factual that review is
    - Better graphics card (future proofing games)
    - DX11 (which is Battlefield 3's flagship DX; R2 is DX9/10)
*BF3 can run in DX10, however DX11 will be a much better experience
    - HDMI 1.4
    - USB 3.0

Lots of benefits for 159$ more :p

Edit: And I agree about the R1's. What a rip off! Some are 1,000$+ on the Outlet when they start for 599$ on the official AW site!
