i bought this m11x r2 a while ago... maybe back in october/november... i barely used it for the first month, but i've used it every now and then after that (i also have a desktop so i only really use it when i'm not in my room). i've noticed that my laptop will shut down randomly while in use - without any warning, just CLICK and off. no blue screen or anything. i had most if not all of the current drivers installed when this happened, so i figure i can probably rule that out. i then reinstalled the OS and the problem stopped for about 2 days... and then started shutting down again. i want to say that usually i get about an hour before it happens, but the time varies between a couple hours to minutes. this problem occurs even while not moving it around, so i venture to say that it's not a shaking/falling laptop issue. i'm almost certain that this isn't a heating issue (i've taken precautions and checked on the temps periodically), not an OC issue (not oc'd), not a virus/adware issue (haven't downloaded much... and what i've downloaded it's been from trusted sites. so i contacted dell support and they used that live contact program to check out my laptop themselves... apparently i hadn't downloaded all the driver updates since reinstalling my OS so the tech started downloading drivers and testing software (a lot of them used for benchmarking and oc'ing haha :D). she told me to run diagnostics and i don't think much if anything important was found faulty (i ran the tests she told me to, but i ran a couple more extensive tests... but i stopped them short because they were taking hours on end and i wanted the use of my laptop). so far, since i contacted the dell support, my laptop hasn't shut down (SOOO convenient huh?)... but i'm wondering, what do you guys think is the likely problem?

probably your battery not charging and shutting down due to draining..
why don't you just return it?

I have the same random restarting issue with my Asus U35JC. The problem is related to optimus. Yet, i havent figured out a way to solve it myself. I ruled out everything else so I RMA'd my laptop to get it checked out.

i bought a m11x r2 i5 a couple months back (barely use because i have a desktop), and sometimes when i'm using it it just randomly turns off... i ran a full diagnostics but it came up in "perfect" condition (using that diagnostics when you start your computer up)... it can happen when it's just sitting there and not being touched or while i'm walking around... i think it doesn't happen when it's plugged in (so i'm thinking battery issue?). what do you think is wrong? what other tests can i conduct to figure out what's wrong? i talked to customer support and they told me to run the diagnostics but i haven't called them back yet as i've been busy (will do soon though)

not to insult you but, by turns off you mean complete shutdown? Or sleep/hibernate

lols nah it's cool, not insulting... i guess i just forget to put in some details :D! it shuts off as in, no warning Click! and it's off and i have to boot it up (and the screen that says that windows did not shut down tidily comes up). it's not power settings as far as i can tell (but thanks for the try), as i have gone through them all multiple times and am using my laptop often when it shuts down out of nowhere. oh, one more thing, sometimes when i close the lid, i have it set to hibernate... but it doesn't turn off as far as i know (but pressing the power button also set to hibernate seems to work... idk if it's related though). sorry for being unclear :D!

I had the same problem with the model I returned. I swapped out the hard drive to a new SSD but I still had the problem, so it was most likely the battery. Either a short was being caused by wires or the battery wasn't connected properly :(

yeah, i was thinking of probably eventually getting an ssd... but i'm going to try to get dell customer service to look into this before i swap or buy anything yet (and i want at least a 120gb ssd, and i don't want to spend that money right now).
