The R3 would be much better, though the $400-500 price difference might not be enough to justify it.

M11x R1 can never play stably when overclocked that high.
It is highly recommended that you purchase M11x R3 model.

my r1 @ 1.9ghz (pinmodded) runs all the games I want almost flawlessly.

My R1 is rock stable at 1.86GHz (TME pinmod) and would even be stable at a higher clock if my RAM wasn't holding me back.

The R3 is faster there is no question about that, but the key here is price.

£500 extra is alot to pay for a relatively modest improvement in real world gaming performance.

i happen to be rock solid stable @ 2.0Ghz.

this post will sum it up for you.

OCed R1 vs OCed R3: basically the R3 IS faster but its the performance to cost ratio that you have to consider.

the R3 has some newer tech on its side too like USB3, newer GPU tech and the CPU will be much faster in multi threaded apps.

for me its always about the best price to performance ratio so i went with the R1 over the R2 when i bought mine.

The graphics card is a minor upgrade and the processor is a major upgrade. At stock a R3 will beat a pinmodded R1 at every cpu task.

i think i shall go with the r1, i got a good desktop for game, so the r1 is for messing around and travels, will the 4gb of dell ram be good for overclocking because Xaser04 said his ram holds him back, because that all i can buy it with and it is as much as i want. Also is the driver support good on the r1

Rock solid stable @ 2.0GHz here too thanks to "Some Guy" who did the mod for me (for a fee). Regarding RAM, the stock RAM is the most stable. My G.Skill 2x4GB would occassionally crash on me.

Yea. no way to really to say 100% for sure how RAM will react due to running it out of spec. but the stock RAM seems fine in most cases.

If you have questions on OCing the R1 check out the link in my sig. Should awnser most of your questions. :)

No matter what anyone wants to believe. A stock R3 will beat a pinmodded R1 in every cpu scenario. The GPU in an R3 will beat the R1. You have to heavily overclock the 335 to match the 540 yet you can overclock 540 and it will always beat the R1. No matter how loyal an R1 enthusiast wants to be, the R3 will beat it heavily in almost every scenario. The only thing the r1 has over the r3 is the battery by only 45min-1hr but to get that battery life you have to use an old driver as new drivers are not compatible with switching graphics yet the new drivers that nvidia releases supports the r3 out of the box.

    I had the R1 and the R3.

I can't say the extra $$$$ is DEFINITELY worth it the difference, but yes it is a faster overall machine.

But its a lot more money too.

when did anyone say the R1 was faster?

what old driver(s) are you talking about? im using all the newest drivers from Dell and i can switch Gfx just fine. my battery life also remains around 6-7.5hrs.

argh! truly this is a dilemma for us R1/R2 owners :( I'm an owner of R1, currently I'm contemplating selling the R1 (got a prospective buyer standing by already) and buying the R3. But the thought of forking out $$$$ hurts :D

It's almost July now, maybe I should wait for the new Ivy Bridge to come out first, before buying an R3..maybe the price will drop a bit then.

Before the R3 came out and right after. There was that thread where we discussed comparisons based on pre-release reviews. There were hardcore R1 users who were claiming their Pinmodded R1 could go toe to toe with the R3 and beat it in scenarios performance wise. Nothing that they run can come close to my R3. An R1 user can't run GTA4 on high settings and still get above 30fps. An R1 user can't run Crysis on extreme and still get 25fps. But the R3 can.

I am talking about the driver straight from nvidia. Dell is behind on their driver and probably won't release any new ones for the R1. I am running 275.33 on the R3 and didn't have to mod the driver to do so. I also thought that the R1 got better battery life then that because I pull off between 6.5-7.5 hours on my R3 and that was supposed to be the R1s advantage over the R3.

Hi guys took the plunge got a deal on a refurbished r2, decided it cause it was the same price as the r1 i was looking at, and overclocking seems easier will let you all know when i get it
