I want to upgrade my m11x r1's hard drive. I want to make sure I get the right model. From what I have read online it should be something like this:
Xgb 2.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive internal 7200rpm or 5400rpm.

Will it be compatible with a 750gb hard drive? Or is 500 the cap?

My other concern is getting the OS and all my files moved to the new hard drive... I could create a mirror image with something like acronis, but im not sure if that will be enough. Will the motherboard notice a change in hardware? Will i need to do anything else?

    Thanks for the help!

As long as it's a 2.5" and 9,5mm high HDD(I'm not sure if 12,5mm and above fit in the M11x since mine is not yet here) you should not have any problem.

You can find 1Tb 2.5" 9,5mm HDDs nowadays too ;)

    Cheers

Sweet, thats pretty easy then. Are you sure there is no cap to how high (gb) i can go? I dont want it to be incompatible with the motherboard or something... I dont want to go too high either, 750gb perhaps.

One more thing, will I notice a difference if i by 7200rpm instead of 5400? Is it worth the couple extra bucks?

I believe there is a noticeable difference between 7200 rpm and 5400 rpm. So it is worth the upgrade, especially if you plan to doing any gaming.

No, there is no cap. And yes, you will notice a difference from 5400RPM to 7200RPM.

My gaming machine has significantly higher specs than my M11x, yet it still runs on a 5400RPM HDD. The performance difference is quite noticeable.

Thanks for the tips and info!

    @some_guy I'm between your recommendation:
Newegg.com - Western Digital Scorpio Black WD7500BPKT 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive
    and this other one
    Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus ST9750420AS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Once I get it (either one) will I be able to clone the hdd with the current one and exchange? Or will the mobo notice a hardware change and ask me to reinstall windows?

you should be able to clone fine.

W7 isnt as picky as Vista was in that regard.

Just wanted to update now that I got the HD.

I ended up getting the WD Scorpio 7200rpm 750gb (upgrading from a 120gb 5400rpm hitachi). I could not be happier with the performance boost!! My boot time was cut from 5 mins and 9 seconds to 2 mins 30 seconds, just amazing!

If you are thinking about upgrading from a 5400 to a 7200rpm hard drive, do so! I wasnt sure just how much better it would be but now that i upgraded I cant believe i didnt do it sooner :D

    awesome!

yes, that WD 750 is one of the fastest 2.5 spindle drives out on the market. (if not the fastest?)

i dont regret buying mine one bit. crazy storage for a laptop while very close to the performance of a current tech desktop spindle drive.

you pay for the premium but IMO its the best choice till SSD become cheaper in the 500GB+ capacities.
