    Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about buying an optical drive to use with my Mass Effect 2 CD.

My question is, when I add the game to steam, (after running the installation CD). What exactly will Steam enable me to do? Can I run the game from my Steams game list WITHOUT a CD?

Remember, I installed the Mass Effect 2 CD

I've read this entire thread and it has been very helpful http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/484197-question-regarding-gaming-m11x.html. But it doesn't answer my particular question.

    Nope, doesn't work like that.
I tried it with a CD copy of C&C3, it says it needs the disk.

Grr, well that's okay. I'll just stick to the digital version then, thanks a lot. :)

You need to buy it from steam or some games can be unlocked in steam with the CD-Key. Then you need to download the steam version. You just added it as a shortcut in steam.

You can always use a virtual cd...

Your best bet is to try and register your physical game CD-Key on Steam, and then Steam will let you download the game.

You can register a lot of games through steam, I'm sure Mass Effect 2 should work.

If it doesn't, you're out of luck.

Just go to Steam > LIBRARY > Games > Add a Game > Activate a Product on Steam

Steam let's you add only certain retail games. There is a list some where, but alot of games out there are not included.

If you own the retail version of Mass Effect 2 you *may* be able to register the CD key into EA download manager - which would allow you to download the game whenever you want.

You're completely right! I tried this with Dragon Age Origins last night. I talked to someone on live chat and they enabled digital download for me.

The other option I had was what you said, just type my code into the program.. it worked! :D
