How are they replacing the M11x hinges? I have an R1 and it's starting to make a dragging sound of rubbing plastic when I open and close it. Right now it's still pretty quiet. Do they have a different style they are attaching to them, or are they swapping the units out?

Is dell paying for shipping to go back to them for the hinges? How long does it take to send in, and get the laptop back?

In the US and CA (that's where I work) it takes 10 business days total and we pay for the service and shipping.

Really? This is one of the reasons I bought a new laptop. My hinge is starting to make strange noises. I'm afraid to even close it anymore.

We have some policies to follow on this situation but if it is within the timeframe, the model and the issue we will be able to help. If you are in the US or CA send us an e-mail to [email protected] and we'll help you out.

Will they replace my hinges with the new design if mine isn't bad yet, since it will probably fail in the future?

I am posting in this thread because as of a few minutes ago, I am in major need of hinge/screen assistance from Dell.

Background: I bought an M11x R2 as soon as the R2s came out, I believe later summer 2010. Love it to death, except that a little over 1 year after I got it (right after my warranty ran out), the plastic hinges for the screen started badly cracking/coming apart (despite my taking excellent care of the laptop and careful transportation padding products/accessories). I've gritted my teeth for almost 2 years now, just accepting that these Alienware laptops were sold with a major manufacturing flaw that causes the laptop to slowly fall apart. I've extended the life of the screen hinges/casing through very careful use of plastic tape, super glue, etc., to add some durability to the cracking hinges.

However, I picked up my laptop today and one of the hinges just finally pushed completely through on the front, with the metal silver strip pushing entirely out of the plastic. I managed to push it back in, but I can't ignore this anymore- my laptop will soon be entirely broken/un-useable. Needless to say, the hinges have also been pushing out the back/splitting at the joint bottom part for a long time.

I need to get either my screen replaced entirely, or at least a new plastic casing/hinging around the screen (if that's cheaper...my screen is pretty scratched up as a result of the hinge issues, so a new screen wouldn't hurt). I am hoping to do this without it costing me an arm and a leg, since my laptop itself works fine. I live in Austin, so I am hoping there is a Dell service center I can manually visit without losing my laptop for an excessive amount of time (I am a full time first-year law student and need my laptop for many hours daily.)

    Please help!

Both the hinges have failed on my m11x.
Any idea where I can email for an Australian customer please?
I tried emailing [email protected] which was the email given in the original releases about this problem, but a month has passed and I've had no reply.
I can't get seem to get anywhere on the dell website without purchasing an extended warranty.

I don't suppose anyone else has any suggestions as to what I should do?
I've had it for a couple of years, but it's not my main computer and barely gets used for 15 minutes a week, so it's pretty rubbish that it's failed like this with such low usage.
The whole screen is starting to separate now as well, and dust is creeping in. There was a YouTube video where some guy takes his apart and superglues the broken screws back on.
Given that I can't seem to get any response or acknowledgement from Dell I'm thinking of trying this. Best case it might extend the life span of it a bit. Worse case I'll break it and I need to buy a new laptop - but it's going to break completely sooner or later anyway...

Have you tried calling a Dell technical representative? It's what I normally do, and so far they've successfully arranged 2 LCD replacements for me.

Hi, I luckily found this forum after searching this hinge issue on the Alienware m11x. Unfortunately, I have an Alienware m11x R1 with me in Honduras, but was bought on the US. At first the hinges got really broken and had to be replaced but the warranty was covered with no problem by a company named UNISYS, which was stated as a DELL GSA PARTNER. However when they repaired my m11x, the hinges replacing the old ones, were still from the faulty batch. Now I've had the misfortune to deal with another DELL PARTNER called Grupo Multisistemas since UNISYS seems to have gone inactive in Honduras. I asked Multisistemas, which self define as DELL technical support in Honduras, to provide me support with my faulty hinges probably since DELL took matters into the problem and posted about the repair DELL's Corporate Blog. However they always have "No" for an answer without even checking what's the matter with my system. Now I find myself needing more than ever the repair since I've found out the webcam and microphone are dead and not even listed in the device manager surely because of the hinges issue. I found out this just recently when I was in need of my webcam and microphone for a videochat conference but hadn't used it since probably years ago. The other problem has been scratches on the screen due to the keyboard making contact, some weird noises, and the hinge looks "popped" from one side. I gladly accept any suggestion since I really like my m11x and works perfectly without taking into consideration the before mentioned problems. Thank you very much and sorry for the long and boring story!

    Hi there!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the new company, have you tried contacting DELL directly?

    +1 512 725 5007

Is that the phone number you called? If the 1st time got replaced before February 2011 then they are still the batch that was not working and need a 2nd replacement.

Sorry for replying after a month, missed the email for replies (maybe it was spammed). I checked the repair date from the receipt UNISYS handled me, and it seems the repair date was from 1/29/11. The technician had a terrible handwriting, it seemed it was the 4/29/11, but can't be the case because my warranty had expired by 4/17/11, and I clearly remember I asked for a replacement some months before my warranty expired. What's the best suggestion for my m11x's problem? Thanks you very much!

The system should show the actual date, try giving them a call and let them know about that timeframe (Feb. 2011).
