From personal experience there is no solution. Notice the PERSONAL!
I never had this problem before but once I updated to the newest BIOS I instantly had this problem for a day or two. Then magically it disappeared and I have not had it since.

I have issues too. I disabled it from going to sleep while closing the lid because I like to have it closed when hooked up to the tv or while downloading stuff etc. so I use the power button to put it to sleep. It seems like if I hit the power button and close the lid before its actually asleep the screen will be shut off but the LEDs remain on and I can't wake it. I have to hold down the power button until it shuts down.

I have no sleep problems with my M11x when using the built in screen, when I plug it into an external monitor it wont go to sleep or even switch the monitor off when its not being used. I have checked all the settings and its supposed to!! Its actually really annoying, when I'm watching programs in bed on my lcd and I fall asleep it says on all night showing the desktop :(

Is there any fix for this?

I have the correct drivers installed for the external monitor...

oh yeah, I have this problem.

Was watching a movie VIA HDMI to external tv, I had the TV to auto sleep.

Woke up in the middle of the night, my laptops monitor was on blasting the movie because the TV had shut off.

The laptop didn't go into sleep mode.

or... does it only go to sleep mode after the movie is done playing?

Had a few issues with the computer going to sleep during long overnight steam downloads, and then not being able to "wake up"

solved this by simply turning it off in the power management screen. I don't really use "sleep mode" very much anyway... if I'm using the PC it's on, if I'm not it's powered off. Fast and simple.
