Hi, so my m11x r2 gpu stopped working a couple of years ago and only the integrated works but I've been thinking about replacing the motherboard now that they're getting cheaper so I can have it as a extra gaming setup. I'm curious if there's any problems with the ones off ebay,
    like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Genuine...741434?hash=item2efa3c25ba:g:0i4AAOSwa~BYRd4h

Also is installation pretty straight forward, just remove and replace? Thanks.

If you buy on e-bay make sure the seller has a good feedback rating. Also make sure the replacement you get has the CPU you are looking for because there were a couple of different CPUs offered for the M11X R2.

To replace it, I linked a good teardown video in this thread:

You may want to read the tips and suggestions posted in that thread as well.

Thanks. I actually had the best possible processor for the r2 I think but unfortunately that's not salvageable :(

I have an Alienware M11x r2 with an i3 and I was wondering the same thing, if I could upgrade it to an i7 easily. Those motherboards on ebay you referenced were like 180 dollars last year, it might not be a back idea to pick one up, but then again can you really be sure the parts are good?

I wonder if the i7 board is dimensionally the same as the i3

The R2 was offered with the i7-620um so you should be able to upgrade to that board with no issues. Just make sure it's an R2 board because the R3 has some differences. Not sure how much of a performance gain you will actually notice though. The 620um is a low power dual core and if you look at benchmarks between the 620um and the i3-330um you'll notice that there's not a huge difference, and probably not much of a difference that you will actually notice in day to day use. That and the fact that the R2 motherboards still use the 335M for graphics.

There are lots of reliable sources for parts. Parts-people.com for example is a trusted source as are some U.S based e-bay sellers I've purchased from. Just check reviews and feedback ratings and check the seller's return policy.

I'd say if the board needs replacing, just get what's cheapest and from a good seller.

Yea but the thing is my R2 i3 is still going strong it runs day-to-day tasks and college engineering stuff (python, vba, matlab).
If my cpu got nuked or something I might replace it with an i7.

However I do like how the R1's came with a factory VGA output...
wouldnt mind adding a VGA output to my R2 although I do have an adapter
