Looking at the service manual it would appear that the Display Assembly is one piece. Does this mean there is no way to just replace the plastic that is over the screen? I have a crack in it, and I assume replacing the whole display assembly would be somewhat pricey.

Really wish I had gotten complete care now.

Forgot my iPod was syncing and sitting on the keyboard and tried to close it. It's not too bad, only a corner of the iPod broke through the plastic.

Every display I have seen comes as a single, pre-assembled unit. The problem with trying to replace just the plastic is that it would be incredibly easy to get dust under there, and trapped between the plastic and the LCD screen itself. This would include anyone doing work on the laptop, like a Dell technician or someone like yourself interested in self-repairs.

Unfortunately, I think your best shot at getting a replacement part would be to get an entire display assembly.

That is what I was afraid of. I may wait and see what the R3 (if one comes out) has to offer and maybe just upgrade.

Hope the damage doesn't cause any problem if I need a replacement for the hinge issue.

Another question, does anybody know what the R2 LCD Assembly would cost from Dell?
