Well, as title said. this a pure speculation.
Fujitsu have a Lifebook P770 w/ i7-640UM out. And the battery is 6 cell (10.8V, 5,800mAh). AW M11xR2 got 8 cell 63Whr, although input voltage is 14.8VDC the battery could be just 12VDC, but I don't know. According to TechRadar, this unit got 427 minutes of run time. I'm not sure how they test the battery life, but that look impressive.
Screen size is 12.1 inch (1280x800), so pretty similar to M11xR2, but no discrete graphics.

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting :)

And in conjunction with the thoughts of Seagate Momentus XT and how much that will drain. hmmm. I should have studied math more in school :p

Remember these numbers will be very similar due to the new Nvidia optimums technology of auto switching from Intel to Nvidia based card

i was very curious about this too-- does anyone have any speculation that they'd like to share about how optimus technology will affect the battery life of the R2?

Will it be switching that often?

I am going to assume only during heavy flash video's like 1080P and gaming.

I gonna say just gaming. Anything that use OpenGL & DirectX. Flash video could probably get away w/ Intel GMA HD. As this is new Intel redesign GPU that it suppose to be better than GMA4500 and most flash video are actually H.264 wrapped in flash. So, majority of the time Optimus will not kick in the discrete GPU.

From the page: Fujitsu = sleek. ROFLMAO. The piece of wood I use beneath my m17x is more sleek than that piece of junk.

I don't know what that sentence means "Most Core i7 laptops manage only average battery life, but the Fujitsu runs for an excellent 427 minutes. ". Most? How many laptops actually have i7 ULV CPUs?

On Intel GMA HD... have you actually used a laptop with an IGP ever? Flash videos rofl - Of course it's fine. It's not an iphone. :D The ONLY reason I use dedicated GPU is for gaming.

It is poorly worded, but I think they're trying to say that this ULV i7 gets way more battery life than a standard voltage i7, not comparing laptops with the same processor.

I'm sure with all the benchmarks that are being requested currently, I doubt we will have an accurate reflection of the i7-640UM battery life any time soon.

However, I am extremely interested in knowing if it will last very long. Nothing is worse than something that can't last long enough to get enjoyment out of it.

I just read the article, and I still don't understand it. Here is the quote,
I think the 8 hrs is what is said on the brochure and not from a reviewer, since he doesn't even know which CPU exactly is in the laptop.

Here's a snippet about another laptop using the same processors, the Asus UL30Jt. "On display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Asus UL30Jt notebook features a 13.3″ 16:9 slim-type LCD display, Intel Core i7-640UM/620UM processor, up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 640GB 7200rpm SATA HDD, and up to 12 hours of battery life, all in a package less than one-inch thick."
I don't know how accurate that is, but it's a big difference from what the alienware representative said about 5.5 hours of battery life. Any thoughts?

oh and it also sports an 8-cell battery

Can't you just use your mac to read DVD and make an iso, then use something like SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive (freeware) to make virtual DVD drive?

I only plugged in about an hour ago. on a full charge I'd say normal use at half brightness without B/T will last the Dell stated 5 - 5 and a half hours.

I'll test for defo with a stop watch tonight once it's fully charged. I'll follow that up with a full gaming session and give you batt results on that too.

    Thanks a ton!

That potentially reduced battery life is something that scares me, because this is still using ULV CPU and if it becomes power hungry then it will lose another advantage that R1 had.

OK I found the GTA disks. How do I create the ISO? Also how can I transfer said ISO's over to my M11x? I only have a 16GB SD but I don't think I can transfer files larger than 4GB onto/off of it......... I haven't got a external HDD until I get back to the UK next week

Daemon tools Lite for mounting up ISOs. I used Nero to rip CD/DVDs. I believe to transfer files > 4 GB the drive needs to be formatted to NTFS file system instead of FAT32 which your drive probably is.

I just thought everybody already knew that FAT32 have 4GB limitation per file. As well as 2TB partition limit on older NTFS format. (Win7 don't have that problem though, XP does, and this including NAS volume) I'm sure this will creep up at some point as 2.5-3TB HDD start rolling out.

OK, she just shut down at 5%. 4 hours 24mins

I was running on half brightness, fairly intensive internet browsing the entire time. Bluetooth on, Wifi on, Bluetooth mouse. 30-45mins solid gaming with 360 usb controller. Read from/write to HDD @7200 for approx 110mins Finally it was on balanced power settings for the first 2 hours then I switched to High performance to game and write to HDD. Fairly good performance I thought not upto the C2D's however on power saving and turning off bluetooth I can easily see it lasting 5 1/2 - 6 hours

Hope this puts to rest some of the worrying on i7 ULV battery life for some folks

Hmm I don't know. Window's normally way optimistic estimated battery remaining time has not gone much more than 5 hours on 100% battery, 1/2 brightness and the thing idling. The R1 I've seen 7-8 hours estimated. I seems it'll only go ~4hrs at best just doing regular Windows stuff..

I can also live with that battery life. That's a good baseline, and I'm sure that you'd get more if you needed to stretch it (ultimate road-warrior/traveller setup, low screen brightness, wireless/BT off, etc).

My current MBP gets less than that in Win7, even when I'm squeezing it, so this makes me happy.

    +Rep for you, good sir!

For the time being, here is what I got.
    Starting from 96% battery(unplug power)
both BT & wifi inuse, mainly web surfing and about 20 mins of lightroom3 including download picture from USB card reader (about 20 files). Brightness set at about 60-65% the whole time. Alienware LED(AlienFX) was left at default, Astral Aqua.
1 hour later, 72% battery, and now estimate about 3:18 left. Because of the way TurboBoost works, I think the estimate battery life will not be very reliable. Difference type of work will consume different amount of power.
UPDATE 1: another 1:50 went by from web surfing, now my battery sitting 33% with the estimation of 1:27 hour left.
Total battery usage sofar, 63%, almost 3 hours.
UPDATE 2: 45 mins went by, 15% remaining w/ estimate time left 39mins.
