all other things being equal, is the i7 actually much quicker than the i5? The results on the throttlestop thread seem to put them near enough next to each other.

The answer to that question depends on the context.

In actual day-to-day use of an M11x R2 w/Core i5 vs Core i7, there will be no noticeable difference between the two laptops. It will not have any noticeable effect on how fast your computer boots, how fast your applications load or run, or how fast/well games run.

The only time when incremental clock speed increases will be noticeable are if you are running CPU-based video encoding applications on your laptop, if you are running a CPU-intensive game (with the only two notable titles being GTA4 and Civ5), or under CPU benchmarking.

Thats what I pretty much though so decided on the i5.

Then decided to pay the extra £50 and upgrade to an i7, 4gb ram, 500gb HD and bluetooth module. Thought that was quite a deal!!

50 pounds for all of those upgrades is a pretty good deal. If I were in your position, I would have done the same.

In the US, if you don't get a deal, then it costs an additional +$150 USD just to upgrade the CPU from Core i5 to Core i7. I always say that is definitely not worth it, and that $150 USD would be much better spent on something like an SSD, which would show noticeable practical performance benefit.

In any case, glad to hear that you're happy with your purchase. That was quite a deal you found.

Indeed, £50 to upgrade all of that is outstanding.

yeah went digging and thought WOW!

although thats only if quidco goes through too, and vs the base price of the i5 which is 849. Theoretically this should cost 899 :) Will be well happy if it does!

I actually plan to move the SSD out of my desktop and into the laptop :)

my quidco paid pretty much on the 2months average as stated on quidco. Best thing is for some reason it tracked for Double and I got £150 back
i7/4gb/500gb/ all told for approx £750 ~(10% dell voucher etc) I Reckon I own the cheapest i7 out there. I also got £117 back in comp from Dell for sending 2 duds!
£633!! I am now also self employed so its time to claim 17.5 % VAT too as its used for the business!!. woo ha woo ha ha
If the hinges break so what it cost peanuts!....but im not bragging :D

Mate, I don't know what the esl addition is, lol!

I just went on the dell site and did ther custom build thing. I got it because it does everything I want, and it looks the bees knees. Am a techno mong though, so no ideas about benchmarking, or didn't know what overclocking was, or that it even existed until I came on here.

I didn't know about it until the day I ordered - it's basically just a specific spec with minimal customisation options, but because of that you get a discount on the price. ESL was just the name of some gaming thing that's been knocking around for a while that (I guess) alienware sponsored and thus decided to lauch an edition for it! It's exactly the same as a normal one tomy knowledge!

nah, it's only just left dubai lol, well this morning. i'm hopping the plane flies overhead and someone jumps out and parachutes it in for me. Pretty unlikely, but am *guessing* it's going to Germany today, then UK, then UPS near me, then to me... each step being a day. Oh and there's customs... maybe ?

If you are really that excited about your new laptop (I was too), here is the best advice that I can give: Have a camera ready, and start taking pictures when your laptop arrives. The unboxing experience of an awesome new toy like a laptop is REALLY exciting, and is something that you may want to remember (like I did, in my sig)

To geeks like us, the experience is probably up there with the arrival of a new puppy or the birth of your child. Savor it.

yeah pretty excited about it :D It's now in Germany lol! Have just been looking at the youtube vid of one being taken to pieces. Looks like there are two mini pcie slots in in, one half height (for the wifi) and another full size.

Interesting :D Read a few threads about upgrading the performance of the wifi in some cases, but that leaves a full size free (for me anyway...)

    /ponder /ponder :D
