    just purchased the R1 w/ 250 GB 7200 drive.

it's perpetually clicking/whirring/seeking. in addition to hearing it the alien's eyes flicker constantly.

is this normal? is this a driver issue? if so, could someone point me in the right direction?

in my previous post, i explained that i just picked the system up last night and noticed the keyboard curved up slightly at the upper right corner and the laptop itself rocks slightly. both of these things are disconcerting but don't know if i should call dell.

if the drive is also suspect, i will to try to remedy all of these issues.

    thanks in advance

    How loud is the clicking?

Does the smart data report any faults?

The keyboards are a little wonky on the R2's. I'm not sure if the R1's had the same issue.

Download and install HDTune. It will show you S.M.A.R.T. data for the drive. A clicking drive is usually a bad sign that you need to address asap.

ok, just did a benchmark and quick scan.

bench showed minimum 51/ maximum 103 transfer rate.

quick scan showed 0.0 damaged blocks.

    it must be something else.

i checked the driver for the disk and it's up to date. i don't know. periodically, just now for instance, the fan will blow and the hard drive will start up (louder than the constant clicking activity) and make two read noises and then be quiet again, just slight clicking. it has to be a smart disk protect or something.

    any more suggestions?

    thanks.

i also have the intel rapid storage technology program installed.

    should this be removed?

it seems like it's constantly buffering and won't stop reading the platter.

Did you look at the health tab in HDTune?

Reboot the computer and boot into the Dell diagnostics suite. Run diags on the drive.
