I just bought an R1 m11x on sat. from dell outlet, and it should be here wed.

I read about the hing problem, are there any other major issues I should be concerned about?

are there any nice backpacks that fit the m11x well without being over-sized?

links to other useful info?

Congrats on buying one hell of a fine machine!
Apart from the Hinge issue (which seems to already have been resolved check out http://http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/560021-m11x-r1-r2-new-hinge-design.html) there really isn't anything wrong with the m11x. Eye popping design, ultra portable, packing quite a punch...it's just a superb machine!
As to a backpack, I only have a small carrying case into which my m11x fits snugly ( Buy.com - Mobile Edge AWNS01 Carrying Case for 11.3" Netbook - Black)
I really can't think of anything you 'have' to have. The m11x is quite a beast.
Have a good one!

I would say keep up with the white cotton insert that came between the keyboard and screen. The plastic screen is prone to picking up oil from the keys, and worse, getting scratched.

Also make sure you go into the BIOS and overclock that sucker :p

And don't forget to get the EVGA Precision Tool for overclocking the card a bit.

I did search, I found alot of useful info to, but I know that not all of the threads are up to date, or I might have missed something...

Would a plastic screen protector be a better option?

how decent is the stock TIM and would pulling the HS/fan and using AS5 void the warranty?

Not really. Image degradation is pretty significant and the image quality of these are already pretty blah. Just use some sort of thin insert such as the one they provide. ShaggyMac and Radtech ScreenSavrz are both good alternatives that look good and are durable.
