Has anyone here bothered with the i3 version of the r3? I mean, I dont think its overclockable at all since the Sandy bridge archetecture doesnt let you OC.

It seems like a waste of money( no disrespect to those that have one), must struggle badly with CPU intensive games.
I thought about getting one but changed my mind.
You would need an i5 at least to have fluent FPS to game with most modern games.
I would like to here what owners have to say.

well with bf3 beta I can play on native resolution and high with no problem.
but when I go on the bigger map with the vehicles I have to drop the settings to mid.

It isn't really surprising now is it... It still is 540m 1gb, same as with I5, It still processes graphics same way as I5, CPU is just used for AI and sometimes physX, if it would perform as well in say starcraft 2 or C&C3 etc. then it would be surprising. That is cause FPS AI is fairly simple and doesn't require as much CPU juice as say AI that controls 3-4 digit amounts of units with multiple choices plus makes decisions based on state of allies/enemies.

it cant be 1.3, my r1 is OCed to 1.6 and Bad Company 2 barely runs, try CPU-Z and let us know what that says your clockspeed is.

My bad, I thought i3's only came with a 335M and not the 540M.
At least when I was looking at them they did.

Can you run 3DMark 06 to see how it compares to the i5/i7 M11X.

    Awesome, thanks!
It actually scored better than i thought it would. Nice score :D
I see you had AfterBurner running in the backround, was the GPU overclocked during the test?
Overall I'm impressed what this mahine can do even with a i3.
So run into any trouble with any games? Can you list the games you tried with a brief explanation on how they played?
Sorry for being a pain but this has me intrigued.

Thanks I actually never benched it before using 3dmark 06 so I don't even know if 7.4k is acceptable xD
and for the software in the background it was EVGA presicion and I had a mild OC 800/1680/1080 (my oc preset while I game)

The list of games I played on my r3 i3:

Games that were playable 20 fps or higher
-Deus Ex HR (Medium/High settings no AA, lowest it dipped was 20 when there was plenty of action but most of the time it ran very smooth)
-Sims 3 (maxed out settings 23-38 fps, depends on whats going on in the screen)
-Portal 2 (maxed out 2x AA, butter smooth)
-GTA IV (Medium @ 720p resolution with performance tweaks, lagged quite a bit when I got to the third part of the city)
-League of Legends (All high setting, 55+ fps)
    -Assassin's Creed 2/Brotherhood (medium/high setting, 28+ fps)
-crysis 2 (Advanced setting 25+ fps)
-Tropico 4 (Max settings, fan didnt even turn on)
    -BF3 beta (high settings/shadows low, 23-30 fps park/subway map)
-warhammer 40k (forgot my settings but it was either medium or high, it didnt lag but felt like a movie around 24 fps)
-Driver San Fransisco (maxed setting, buttery smooth)
-Dead Island (all high, was running amazingly well 28+ or so fps)
    -Bulletstorm (high settings, 30+ fps)

most of the games here are ran in either 1360 or 1366 by 768 unless I stated it.

Also the only game I feel the i3 cannot cope with is TF2 where theres 32 or so players and it's in a big map, the i3 is put to its knees.

    P.S.

I'm probably missing a couple games there that I've played, so if you wanna know how a game plays just let me know I'll see what I can do.

    :) hope this helps

Well, I got 7700 on 3d mark 06 on my R2 OC @166 with my GPU slightly overclocked (details in my sig). So I am assuming the R3 i3 was cheaper than the R2 i7? Although, for more graphic intensive games (which would be the majority) the R3 i3 would still be well in front due to the superior GPU.

Agree that is better to buy the i5 R3, but as a replacement for R1, i3 R3 does wonders :)
Let's not forget that a sandy bridge @1.3 GHz is almost twice as fast than the SU7300 from R1 and you also get a plus in the form of gt540m.

So, ye... i3 R3 is way better than R1, congrats to fluffboy... lucky you :)

yea, I managed an *almost* 7000 score with my r1, 6953, its just a shame that you cant OC that cpu. If you could I would actually consider getting it. overall, a pinmodded r1 would be superior to i3 no?

Probably a wash, some CPU intensive games would run better with the R1 but i3 with 540M would be better with GPU intensive games.
Either way they are both pretty good little systems.

wrong. with my cpu pin modded at 1.73ghz, and a decent gpu overclock i was getting just about 8k on 3dmark 06.

    with my R1.

No one is competing about who gets highest 3DMARK 06, but they are pretty close.
It's an old benchmark that is out of date but it seems pretty popular with the M11x crowd, that's why I asked.
Anyway the most important part is that it can game pretty well even with the i3.

    @ajslay
Aye, you get 8k at the price of losing warranty and a "decent" gpu overclock.
He got 7400 at stock clocks while keeping his warranty and let's not forget that 540m also overclocks really good.

But again, this is not about 3D Mark but about what i consider a good deal getting i3 R3 as an exchange for an R1.

Thanks guys, I' am humble that I got an i3 m11x r3 for my r1,good thing the dell costumer support here in Norway is pretty easy to deal problems with.

Also this i3 is my main computer and it does my everyday without a hitch, and when I do game It performs like it should, but then again I don't ask much from it while I play games since it is only an i3.
