Hi, I bought my M11x R1 in late april when they were going for $599 new on the dell website. I got it sometime in mid may and within a month, the screws that hold the bottom plate on were lose and weren't going in. I called the customer service and they sent me a new plate with screws. That one wouldn't screw in either, so I assume its the chassis that's defective. I've been too lazy/busy to call in customer support to get this thing fixed or replaced, but i'm finally going to get around to it tomorrow. What can I expect them to do? Can I get them to send me a box and I ship it in for replacement? There's a few other QC things I've noticed as well since I've had the laptop. The plastic part in the very front of the grill is really loose and the keyboard is sort of uneven. I've also heard on here that the hinge with the R1's is a ticking timebomb and is basically garanteed to break eventually. I don't really want some "repair guy" to come to my house and screw with my computer, what are the chances I can send it in for replacement, or at least send it in for repair?

If you do have the option of the tech coming to you, I'd say that's the better option of the two. I've heard pretty bad stories of the dell depot. People have stated to use that as a last ditch resort, and opt for the tech to come to your house.

From the sounds of it the base is bad, this requires the whole laptop to be taken apart down to bare. So, they may actually offer you a replacement system instead of fixing it.

But I would do in house tech over sending it in.

    1) If your Alienware M11x R1 is still under warranty, then you can have it repaired either in-home by a local technician, or by sending your laptop to Dell for repairs.

In-home technician repair usually happens in 1-2 days. Sending your laptop to Dell can take around 2-3 weeks. If you prefer sending your laptop to Dell, just ask for that type of service when you call them.

    2) Dell will repair the hinges on your Alienware M11x R1 for the life of the laptop, even if it is out of its warranty period. Not everyone has a hinge problem with their machine. But those who are unlucky enough to encounter it are very upset and vocal about it (and understandably so).
