Bought Witcher from Steam ages ago, but didn't play for various reasons, including the old optimus issues. Gave it a go a few days ago and bam, smooth as butter with everything on high (except shadows medium) and 8xAF/2xAA at native rez. I was impressed!

Unfortunately, it won't play in Steam offline mode. Witcher2 has the same problem, but someone on the steam forums made available a boxed version EXE to everyone, which works. I haven't been able to find a similar (or any for that matter) solution for Witcher 1.

Anyone else had this problem and worked it out? Or any ideas?

why doesnt it work in offline mode? all games work fine for me, don't got witcher, but if you reboot before going into offline mode steam wont start-up. So either sleep your laptop or do go offline before getting off ur wifi

I have about 3 dozen steam games, they all work in offline mode. Just not Witcher. And you can't just turn steam off, because the Witcher launcher (and game exe) just relaunch it again.

so its online verification protection deal i suppose... Don't really see the use of all that mumbo jumbo as the games get cracked and pirated just as easily... You're out of luck playing this game legally.

There is no DRM on The Witcher 1 or 2 so i can't imagine that's the issue... Are you actually restarting Steam in Offline mode before disconnecting it from the net?

Ok weird. I don't what I did, but all of a sudden it works now. The client upgraded itself today after installing Skyrim, maybe that did something.

All of your suggestions didn't work yesterday, but now they all do. thanks anyway!

(PS. Bought Skyrim out of my frustration with the Witcher offline problem, and now I can't seem to bring myself to go back to it, lol)
