So, with the coming of Win 8, it seems like a revolution is under way, a lot of ultra books are coming out with keyboard and touch screens and some are even going to the extreme of tablet and dock keyboard + atom cpu for a full blown windows.

Sad that Alienware stopped making the mx11, or else we would soon have had a drop in touch screen to upgrade our mx11.

    So, my real question:

ANYONE HERE FLIRTING WITH THIS IDEA ? or just remotely thinking and dreaming about fitting a touch screen in the mx11. This would be GOLD :D

Count me in. Tried out Win 8 on a normal PC and didn't really like how it was too touch optimised. Went back to Win 7 and wished the 11x had a touchscreen. :)

I had made a attempt awhile back to make my own, but couldnt find a touch panel at the time so I scrapped the idea.

these have been around for quite awhile, we have an old Iconia w500 (AMD c-50 APU ) and a MSI windpad 110w running around our household, and the w500 has to be about 2 years old ( yes upgraded to win 8 ), ASUS has even made nice ones with i5 ULV CPU's et al.

Personally I dislike ever having to touch my screen. Something as benign as removing a spec of dust or a hair with my fingertip inevitably leaves a smudge on the screen that I later have to fix using a cleaning solution. I don't like to risk scratching the screen as much as possible.

Now if it was a sealed Gorilla Glass screen like on my Galaxy S2 I wouldn't have a problem with it.

How hard was it to get that screen out and what are the connections involved for fitting a screen in an MX11 ?

    so,

We do have 11.6" touch screens around and we can easily take the mx11 apart and fit a new screen.

    The next question is:

    1. What are the connections or connectors involved ?
    2. I doubt these things need any drivers !
    3. Branded screens would be GOLD ... something like a samsung or .... well :) something

Windows 8 makes me sick. Looks like a failed attempt at playing Apple. Skipped Vista will happily skip the fail by Microsoft to make a touch screen OS. Yawn.

I do agree with you on that, it is a desperate attempt to get some market share but fail or no, touch screen is the future and we need to start pondering on that. Windows 8 may not be the best, but it is the beginning of something big.

So i found a you tube video and apparently you don't need to open up your laptop to get to the lcd, which is goooood.

Came across a few blogs where people have done touch screen swaps to their net books, i will keep digging.

I just hope that the screen connector which seems straight forward don't need anything additional plugs or pins to accommodate the touch side of things :)

    I will be back ...

Had a look at this one and it has a 30pin connector, we need 40pin connectors for the mx11 ;) we are slowly moving in on it ;)

I found a lot of people have fitted touch screens to their netbooks and it worked fine ....

Just contacted them and they replied promptly. The lady there called Rita tells me she can get me 40 pin connector screens and wants to know the exact specifications of my current screen. Replied and now wait and see .... for $80, worth a try.

I'll make sure to watch a dozen you tube videos before attempting this.

Me got a response back and apparently they have a fit for the MX11 model capacitive touch at 11.6"

    $45 - screen
    $50 - DHL postage

But for some reason, i get the impression that the person completely discarded the fact that I am after a touch screen, i just asked her to confirm that we are talking touch screen and not just another same screen i already have, lol. Would be gold if i just bought a cheap version of the screen i already have.

Anyway, here are the specs she gave me:

    Model: B116XW01
    11.6"
    slim
    led, 40pins glossy
    1366x768
    100% new
    delivery 2-3 days

Nowhere does she mention that it is touch, now lets wait for her reply and see whether i wasted my time or not :)

FAIL - As presumed, they completely ignored the "touch" in everything. Back to square one :)

If nav is by touch there isn't anything really "wrong" with W8 tiles... but for mouse & multitask use its just in the way. It reminds me of console games ported to PC! bleh.

I certainly don't agree that this looks like any "attempt at playing Apple", not by a long shot. Why is it such a popular belief that every company wants to be like Apple? Do you feel that way because Win8 has a marketplace and supports touch(because Apple didn't create the concept of a market or touch interfaces)? If this OS were anything like OSX I wouldn't even consider it because OSX is bland, not to mention Apple machines are severely under-powered. Hey I've got an idea..... 13" Macbook Pro with "Retina" display and NO dedicated GPU for $1700 <------ lol. Nobody in the PC market could rip their customers off like that and get away with it.

This is completely different in user interface and so much more base functionality. I applaud them for trying something new. If they really wanted to play Apple then Windows 8 would just be an iteration of Windows 7. It's not like Apple is even attempting to innovate these days. They play it safer than anyone else in the market at the moment.

It might not be an instant win, but its moving in the right direction and trying something new. It will be so much better when they have more of a contextual change between the standard desktop and the metro interface based on the way the user is interfacing the device(mouse/keyboard vs touch). I don't see why it would make you sick though. You don't ever even have to use the Metro interface with a mouse and keyboard. I've been using the OS just fine for about a week now and I don't understand some peoples' disgust.

Those still have some advantages over a normal touch screen these days. It could also work through the plastic cover of the m11x lcd assembly.

I would'nt have any utility of being able to touch my screen. What is the point unless you want to draw or write with a pencil directly on your screen?

    its pointless to me

    Keyboard > Mouse > Touch

That is just the LCD. The 'soft-touch' refers to the chassis.

I would really like to find a touch screen mainly for use with Win 8.
Makes things just a little easier.

On a side note, stay away from Impact Computers!
I recently tried upgrading my R2 to an R3 and ordered the parts from them.
They got everything wrong. Sent me all R2 bits. They have the right part numbers on their site but I don't think they realize how different the parts are, sending "compatible" parts instead.
Not happy, had to return the goods at my cost and only got a refund of the parts minus shipping after two months and nasty emails.

I did get the upgrade finished in thre end which works awesome, last thing now is the touch screen. Hopefully we can find a capacitive touch, I don't think a resistive would work as well with Win 8.

sorry for not reading all the posts.

but here is my solution: internal wwan to usb connector and a high quality capacitive screen (u can find them all over the internet) the problem will be with the thick plastic screen protector

I'd have to agree with you, can't find a reason why I would rather have a touch screen. Wouldn't it be hard to use? The laptop's screen angle is not comfortable enough to use it as a notepad or tablet.

    Hi All,

Just remeber the pin config needs to be the same: LVDS-40P1C6B-060A is our pin config, you can have a search through panelook.com and see if you can find a touch screen that supports the same pin config.
