I just ordered my m11x r1 to work, watch movies, study, and play starcraft 2. One question however, since su7300 is pretty weak, I heard a lot of people is OCing the su7300 all the time, so my question is will I kill my computer by doing that?... I am afraid of the cons of overclocking which I don't know at all!

I overclocked fully and got BSOD on heavy operation. I would say the downside is instability. If it's not apparent during non-intensive use, the BSOD might pop up unexpectedly during something important. Mine BSODs while opening SC2.

If you OC, do lots of stress testing to make sure your processor can handle it.

My R1 has been overclocked since day one. I have never had problems with it and I don't have heat problems either. I play games, do productivity, etc. I am planning to get a portable fan for it (fold up kind) just because I think all laptops can benefit from sitting on a fan, buit have had no shutdowns in overclock.

    The risks of overclocking:
    1) Potential for instability. If you push your overclock too aggressively, you are more likely to have an unstable system - lockups, freezes, crashes, BSOD's.
    2) Increased heat
    3) Decreased battery life.
    4) Damage to the hardware. You can risk damaging your CPU through the overclock itself (if you have insufficient cooling, for example). Or you can damage your hardware by shortening the lifespan of the part that you're overclocking. However, most parts will become obsolete long before they "die" from either normal use or overclocking use.

And damage to the M11x's internals due to OCing is extremely unlikely.

More or less, heat and life loss. Life loss being battery, and potential problems earlier than normal with hardware later down the road, but all this is very minimal compared to most OC situations.

The M11x was mean't to be over clocked, usually i'd take more precaution when OC'ing a desktop, but not with this little bugger. Besides, if Alienware says the processor IS overclockable, then you bet your butt its covered under warranty.

The warranty only covers overclocks done by the bios. Any other overclock is not covered.

That's weird because when I had a problem a couple week back (made a thread), i called dell support and they specifically told me that ANY overclock is not cover in warranty. Their reason was that the system is given an OPTION to overclock, doesn't mean you should do it.

    Overclocking - beware!

Once you start down that path forever will it dominate your destiny!

You will become obsessive with "just a bit more" and when there is a system "hang" you will question what you have done... forever will you expect the hang or crash, and the wallpaper in your room will be BSOD patterned.
