That's odd that they ship them with different speed drives, that would really effect the speed of the system all around...

Does anyone know why they would put in 5400 RPM drives in when they say on their site that it should come with a 7200 RPM? Maybe different models have different drives?

Both 5400rpm and 7200rpm drives are available as options when you order online. You get to choose what you want, it's not like you're forced to take a slower drive if you don't want one.

Do you think it would be worth it for me to move up to a momentus XT? Or just save up some $$$ for a big SSD when they drop a little in price.

If you want performance, then nothing even comes close to what an SSD can do for you. But as you are aware, you sacrifice some affordability and drive capacity for that extreme performance. Right now, the sweet spot for SSD's is to get something like an OCZ Vertex 2 120GB or Intel X25-M 120GB for about $200. Put your OS + apps + games on the SSD, and keep your media (music, videos, photos, , etc) on a separate external USB hard drive.

If you are willing to sacrifice performance in order to get better affordability and drive capacity, then a hybrid drive like the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB for ~$130 is a very popular choice among forum members here.

    I had a 250GB, 7200 RPM Hitachi, Sata 3.0. I upgraded to a Samsung Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache. Now I put so many games on it, I'm back down to 250GB free lol

    Stock: Seagate Momentus 320gb 7200rpm
Now: Seagate Momentus XT 500gb 7200rpm

Need space for VMs so SSD was not an option. Boot takes 1min. Word and Firefox load nearly instantly. No compromise in my opinion. Can't wait for a new version of this drive.

Hmm~ it seems like Seagate is the most popular drive brand that Dell uses in these machines.
I really was speed and high capacity so I may wait until I can get a 240gb SSD or more for a good price. But it will be nice to see how the next gen XT's will do.
