In short words the 840 pro is faster but more expensive, which would mean faster load times for games and such.

Overall, if you're upgrading from a HDD you'll notice a huge difference regardless of the one you pick.

I recently got an Samsung 840 pro 512gb to replace my Samsung PM810 256gb. Don't forget to check how potential SSDs will effect battery life, some are much more energy efficient than others. My 840 Pro is even more efficient than my PM810 was but a friend of mine got an OCZ (Agility 3?) not realizing how power hungry it was. It ruined his battery life and he ended up switching back to his old hdd. I use OCZ SSDs in all of my desktops but I like having long battery life on my laptop.

I have the Kingston SSDNow V300 120Gb, it is cheap and blazing fast. big difference with the former generation SSD's i used (Intel x25M) and SATA III is really rockin' on this disk; benching it i get genuine 400 ~ 500 MBs read's for example, Booting the system (win7 x64) takes a few seconds...

Can the R2 make use of the faster write speeds of a Samsung Pro? I don't think so. From what I learnt when researching for my upgrade, you'll be limited by the SATA-II interface more than anything.
So Samsung 830/840 or Crucial M4 are the best options. I went with a 840 250GB that was at a very reasonable price. I love it!

I don't know about the R2s but my R3's Sata III controller benched 556 read 527 write (above the advertised 540/520) with my 840 Pro

As fatboyslimerr already said, in the R2 you are limited by the SATA II interface, and you should remember this in the future when your benchmarks never reach what's in the drive specs.

But anywhay, you should also think that the more recent SSDs have a long lifespan. IMO you should think about buying the most durable drive, the one that will be fast as you need and will last longer. In fact, you should look for the better speed/lifespan relation. Don't buy a slow or a barely better than a HD drive as it wouldn't make any sense, I think you're going with SSD because they are (can be) lightning fast.

All SSDs have it's life limited by how many times you write to it's cells, as each cell can only be rewrited a given number of times. But it's nothing to worry, it will take a long time for you to wear out the drives in the market today, but always remember that it may take several years, but WILL happen, so remember to TRIM your drive periodically to achieve the durability advertised by the manufacturer. Google for SLC, MLC, TLC and TRIM and you'll find all you need. Also, remember that ageing SSDs start to loose speed, as more voltage and more cycles of write/verify are needed when writing to them (I used the term write to make it easier to understand, the correct is to say program).

I have a 120GB Intel SSD 320 and I'm happy with all but the space itself. I, as almost every other gamer, like to keep various games installed at the same time, let alone videos and photos, and I can say that 120GB is claustrophobic.
And in case you haven't bought you drive already, and if you end buying the same drive I have, PLEASE disable the free-fall sensor or do not install the drivers, or you WILL lose your data. Just in case...

b4nd1d0, i fully agree 120gb is way claustrophobic, installed witcher 2 recently... really tight on space with 120gb. got to keep moving things to my external HDD way too often :/

I got a patriot inferno, it's not the fastest, but i bought it when they were 1£+++ per gb, got mine for 100, so it worked out cheap at the day, even though it has a sandforce controller, works like a charm... Worth noting is if its new/recently updated firmware the SSD takes a while to sort of burn in, i'd get a BSOD now and again, stutters etc. until it settled it in i guess.

for R2 just get a fairly cheap and sturdy drive, 200mb/s read/write is plenty, mine does around that, and it hardly gets maxed out... fills the buffer for copying files in seconds...

i am not sure about OCZ, but when i was buying mine, i was told quite strictly to stay away from those. i keep hearing good things about intel, recent samsungs, kingston etc. usual suspects basically.

Well it will always be faster then a Sata II drive, nowadays most ssd will outlast the time you use them...

Those San Disk SSDs look like a great deal, haven't heard anything about them from owners though.

As for OCZ I've had many OCZ system disks and all of them have been fantastic, (RevoDrive, Vector, Vertex 4, Vertex 3, two Agility 3s, Vertex, Onyx). All of which are in currently used systems with the exception of the original Vertex which was tragically lost after a psu cable mishap. I have also installed a half dozen or so in other peoples' computers without incident. I am aware that some people have had problems with them but I've been lucky so far. Incidentally I've also never touched the firmware on any of my OCZ drives. I however didn't even consider them for my m11x due to power consumption. I was thinking Intel but once I saw the Samsung's performance yet lower power consumption than the SSD I already had, I was sold.

I used to use Crucial M4 (128GB model) which, at the time, was the best SSD choice available.

I also ran 60GB Vertex 2 SSD and 750GB Momentus XT (1st gen hybrid HDD) and didn't have any issues with either of them.

samsung 830 126 gb ssd has been working out great so far i my m11x r2 and since r2 only has sata 2 and 840 would be overkill so the 830 is awesome and really optimizing all the performance shockingly enough :) first time ssd btw and i love it. boot time = 21 seconds

While it is limited by the SATA II bus you can still see improvements to small file speed, power and reliability dependant on the drive you choose.

I'm using a 250 GB Samsung 840 Evo on my R3, it works great.
