    Hey guys,

Recently have been using the M11x and have been loving it but just today, something weird came up that really bothered me and I was wondering if anybody would be able to help me out.

To start off, this issue mainly revolves around the switching of the GPU from integrated to discrete. When I normally use the laptop, changing the GPU from discrete to integrated (or vice versa) requires me to close all running programs in the background such as steam, chrome, etc. Recently, I had no idea what happened but the computer switched from discrete to integrated graphics mode by itself while I was watching a video with several programs like chrome and steam running in the background.

At first the problem wasnt apparent, as I found out that happened because in the advanced power options, the computer puts the GPU to sleep after a certain amount of time that it is not in use (I just dont understand how it would put it to sleep while i was watching a video though...). Now, when I run a demanding game like Bad Company 2, normally before it would run smoothly as long as I use the discrete graphics mode. But after this, everytime I switch from discrete to intergrated it does not ask me to close any programs, and just proceeds to swtiching. However, when i play bad company 2 after this incident, the game was so choppy it was literally unplayable. I then went back out to check my CPU usage and it was at 100%. Something seems to be quite wrong with the graphics switch. I had tried closing all programs and then siwthcing, but the issue didnt seem to be resolved.

A temporary solution was that I went to the main setup screen when you boot the system, and changed the graphics mode to only using the discrete video card. When I played bad company 2, everything was smooth and great. Right now, I just have noooo idea what is going on. Pleasee, someone help me because I am loving this laptop but this small problem doesnt seem to be popping up anywhere and Im starting to get quite worried.

Anyways, thank you for reading and I hope someone can help me out!!

I would suggest uninstalling the video drivers and getting the ones off dell's website and installing them. If that doesn't work reformat the computer and start from scratch. If that doesn't work call dell and tell them what's going on.

lol it sounds like a non functional optimus. i'd check your power settings. maybe you'd be better off using high performance when you want to game and power saver when your not. i think that would make it stay.

You ARE switching back to dedicated graphics before playing a game, right?

It looks like if that's the case that you need to perform a format and reinstall Windows.

yes sir, i am switching it before the game. I have even closed all the programs that i needed to close before when this problem was apparent and it still seems to not work. Is there any way for me not to reformat? I've just gotten this computer barely a month ago and i've been loving it, and also with all the files I've put on i definitely dont want to put everythign back and install. If anyone had a similiar problem please let me know if there is a solution. It'd be greatly appreciated.

And also, thanks to everyone who has replied, the members of this forum have always been kind to computer noobs like me and i like to sincerely thank everyone! =)

try the power settings. like try turning it onto high power settings when you game and see if it still turns off.
