I'm trying to get one of those 27" LCDs from Korea for around $375...but most of the eBay ads say some version of "this ONLY works via dual link DVI-D...nothing else; do not buy if you don't have that port on your computer."
But I'm confused: I have an M11x with this video card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GT540M graphics with 2.0GB Video Memory and Optimus, and DisplayPort and HDMI ports
I know that native HDMI can't drive 2560x1440, but DisplayPort should be able to, right?
Except I can't find any sort of passive DisplayPort-to-dual-link-DVI-D cable or adapter...only 'active' ones for $100+. But if DisplayPort can drive the necessary resolution, why can't I find a $10 cable that will let me hook this thing up to the monitor?

Hello, Domino, you will need an active DP to dual link DVI in order or achieve 2560x1440.

Thanks, yeah that's what more research led me to believe also. I've decided to look at one of the 27" monitor models that has a DP port in addition to just dual-link DVI-D...they cost an extra $100, though.
Another wrinkle is that all of the Korean manufacturer listings on eBay say things like *THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH LAPTOPS*. Even the Crossover 2720MDP model I'm looking at, WHICH HAS A DISPLAYPORT PORT. So are they just being cautious, or what? Why would this monitor magically work with a desktop and not a laptop?
And another question: will DisplayPort alone be able to get the max 2560x1440 from this monitor? The monitor has a DP input...but again, the seller's info says "recommended with dual-link DVI"...it doesn't say explicitly whether, even though it has a DP input, DP will achieve the max 2560x1440 resolution. -
Are you trying to game at 1440p? m11x r3 may struggle with that. I doubt that there would be a problem with running it from a laptop but I have heard the multi input models have some serious input lag. Display port has the bandwidth but those adaptors are expensive. I have an apple monitor which is like the same panel that I could check via displayprt to ensure it works if you like.

Domino, it should work just fine at 2560x1440 with an active Display-Port to Dual-Link-DVI adaptor - a cheap passive adaptor won't work.
A straight display-port connection should also work.
If you buy the screen, post your findings here ! -

Want a 2560x1440 monitor (dual link DVI), can M11x drive that via its DisplayPort?
